This project from the UK asks young people that question under the premise that "small actions x lots of people = BIG CHANGE." The "We Are What We Do" competition challenges young people to enter -- not to win things, but rather to change things.

The NAAEE has teamed up with QuantumShift.tv to launch the 'Be the Change, Share the Story! School Video Contest. The contest is challenging 5,000 teams of students at schools across the US and Canada to make a difference and tell the world. Teams pick a social or environmental project and create two short videos about their project. The first video tells how the team plans to make a difference, and the follow up video shows the team in action, making a difference! Students, viewers, and celebrity judges can log on and vote for their favorite videos. The top teams in each age group will win $50,000 in cash and prizes for their schools. NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications are launching a new sustainability education competition for middle school students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. This national middle school competition will involve a team of students identifying, researching, and recommending a solution to an environmental problem in their community. The Learning & Leadership Grants provide opportunities for educators to engage in high-quality professional development. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study. Environmental Concern is kicking off their fifth annual Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Part one, open to all students in grades 6-8, challenges the students to write a children’s book with a wetlands theme. Presented by the American Museum of Natural History and sponsored by Alcoa Foundation, the Young Naturalist Awards, an inquiry-based research competition, invites students in grades 7-12 to conduct research in the natural world. The American Museum of Natural History's Young Naturalist Awards program is a science-based competition inviting students (grades 7-12) to plan and conduct their own scientific investigations. River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds and the environment. KIND Kid Award recognizes children in grades K-6 who have made a positive difference for animals. National KIND Teacher Award recognizes a Pre-K-12 teacher who effectively incorporates humane and environmental education into his or her curriculum. KIND Children's Book Award honors an outstanding children's book with a humane focus on animals or the environment. Humane Teen of the Year Award recognizes a teenager who has made a significant contribution to animal protection, such as direct work on behalf of animals, aiding in the passage of humane legislation, or educating others to be kind to animals. In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award rewards young people creating their own environmental projects. There are two competitions for the 2009 awards. The Adventure Award is for youth, ages 13-16, working in groups of two to five, that are actively involved in devising and managing the project. The 2009 National Engineers Week Future City Competition, for seventh and eighth grade students, encourages interest in science, technology, math, and engineering among young people, by challenging them to design and build a city of tomorrow. The 2009 essay competition centers on ways to improve water use by creating a home system that minimizes the use of externally supplied water.

The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth is inviting high school students to apply to be part of the Forecast Earth Summit, December 5-7, 2008, in Washington DC. The National Gardening Association (NGA) announced that Home Depot will again sponsor the Youth Garden Grants for 2009. NGA awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program honors young people (ages 13-18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. Call for Illustrators (Grades K-6) Begins May 1, 2008 May is American Wetlands Month! Get your students involved and engaged with the 2008 Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Science, reading, and the arts collide in this annual competition that first asks middle schoolers to compose a children’s book about wetlands and then asks elementary students to illustrate the winning manuscript. The theme for 2008 is “Marshy Migrations: Journey’s of Lifetime.” Each year, animals of all kinds (not just birds!) depend on wetlands for food and protection as they prepare for and complete their seasonal migration routes.
