GRC 2008 Annual Meeting Workshops:

Workshop #1 - Geothermal Reservoir Evaluation

In recent years, GRC workshops have covered the Geologic, geophysical and geochemical investigations used in exploration for geothermal resources. This workshop takes the information from exploration techniques and describes the synthesis and interpretation of the data to construct a geologic model and locate drilling targets for production tests of the reservoir. Well testing is described to evaluate the reservoir potential for commercial development. This 2-day, pre-meeting workshop will bring together experts from the geothermal industry and major research institutions. Topics will include conceptual reservoir models; the application and interpretation of flow testing deep wells; thermal, electrical, and seismic logging and interpretation of logs. Emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of how the reservoir will respond to development.

The price for attending Geothermal Reservoir Evaluation is $300 per person. The fee includes a reception on the evening of Friday, October 3, as well as continental breakfast and lunch on both days of the workshop. Workshop #2 - Basics of Geothermal Resource Development

Workshop presenters from private industry and government will provide expertise for various aspects in the development of geothermal resources. The basics of land leasing, resource exploration and reservoir characterization will be covered. Drilling geothermal wells and design of geothermal power plants lead into resource development and operation. This GRC workshop will be followed on Saturday by a separate field trip to the commercial Steamboat Geothermal Field. The field trip is recommended to everyone taking the workshop to help put the various aspects of geothermal development in perspective.

Introduction to Geothermal Energy

(The workshop is designed for K-12 classroom teachers, and other educators)

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) will sponsor an Introduction to Geothermal Energy workshop, presented by the Geothermal Education Office at this year's GRC Annual Meeting. This free and fun event will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Peppermill Resort in Reno from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (Sign-in begins at 9:30 a.m.) The workshop is designed for K-12 classroom teachers and other educators, but is open to anyone interested in learning about geothermal energy.

This program will feature slide presentations by seasoned geothermal speakers who will cover geology, exploration, drilling, generation of electricity, low-temperature uses of geothermal energy, and other related topics. Lots of free curricular materials (covering grades 3-12) will be given to teachers - along with a light lunch.

We are working on offering a field trip to a nearby geothermal power plant for the afternoon, but it is not yet confirmed.

Registration is required. Deadline September 25.

GRC Educational Workshops

The GRC develops and convenes special meetings, workshops, conferences, courses, and symposia on a full range of subjects pertaining to geothermal exploration, development, and utilization. Specific topics have included:

Drilling, Economics, Environmental Aspects, Financing, Geochemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Heat Pumps, Legal Aspects, Management, Non-Electric Uses and Reservoir Engineering.

The GRC also periodically schedules a basic Introductory Course on Geothermal Energy.
