The Revolutionary City

Colonial Williamsburg brings you “Revolutionary City,” a dynamic two-hour event that reflects Williamsburg’s role in one of America’s defining historical periods. Each day, the east end of the Historic Area comes alive as you become a part of the town’s activities. Witness the collapse of the royal government and revolutionary citizens at war.

See selected Revolutionary City scenes through March 15, 2009. Check "Colonial Williamsburg This Week" when you arrive to see all the programs to enjoy during your visit. Revolutionary City resumes full programming March 16, 2009.

 

  • Mondays

    Three Founders

    Nation Builders

    Preachers, house servants, farmers, actors, and artisans—both enslaved and free—were architects of a new nation no less than General Washington, Governor Jefferson, or Governor Henry. Meet the men and women who helped shape their times. See how their lives, like our own, are affected by the promises of the Declaration of Independence, whether realized or unfulfilled.

    Collapse of the Royal Government 1774-1776

    A number of events occurred in Williamsburg that were pivotal to the evolution of Virginians from subjects of a distant monarch to citizens of a self-governing republic. These events led Virginians to declare that the colonies were no longer under British rule but free and independent United States of America. Witness the difficult choices facing the townspeople.

    Many tests and trials befall the people of Williamsburg as they create a new self-governing society. Several key events move the people of Virginia toward founding a new democratic republic.     Revolutionary Stories are small, intimate scenes with characters you'll meet in Revolutionary City. In Revolutionary City, emotions burn hot for impassioned crowds in the street. Revolutionary Stories offer a counterpoint to that vibrant public debate with focused insights into the lives and motivations of everyday citizens in revolutionary times.

    Get Revved!

    Check the online calendar, or Colonial Williamsburg This Week for Get Revved! program times and locations.

    Kid FriendlyA 15-minute orientation designed for young guests, “Get Revved” gives visitors the chance to hear a person from the past talk about the scenes they’ll see in Revolutionary City. Hear a costumed interpreter explain differences between our world and theirs, and take the opportunity to ask questions.
