House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations to Hold Hearing on Hurricane Katrina Insurance Issues

Washington, DC - Rep. Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, today announced a hearing to investigate insurance issues affecting residents in the Gulf Coast as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.  The hearing will examine concerns raised by both Democratic and Republican Members of Congress about whether private insurance companies have been properly paying claims after Hurricane Katrina.

"In response to concerns raised by a number of members from the Gulf Coast area, particularly Reps. Taylor, Thompson, Jefferson, and Melancon, it is important for the Subcommittee to begin the process of examining the claims paying process by private insurance companies following Hurricane Katrina to establish a factual record for the Committee to consider going forward," said Rep. Melvin L. Watt.

In January, Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Melvin L. Watt (D-NC), issued a statement following the U.S. District Court decision affecting State Farm insurance claims, and called for an oversight hearing on the alleged failures of the insurance system in the Gulf Coast.
