Dry Air Mass Enhances Wildfire Danger Statewide Today...Freeze Warnings Posted for the Big Bend, Northeast and Portions of North Central Florida Tonight through Sunday Morning...Patchy Frost Possible Across Interior Portions of Central Florida on Sunday Morning...Scattered Showers and Isolated Thunderstorms in the Florida Panhandle on Sunday...

Updated 8:30 AM EST Saturday

Arctic high pressure extending from the Mid-Atlantic States southward to the northern Gulf coast this morning will weaken and become centered over the Florida peninsula tonight. A very dry air mass will persist across a majority of the state today which will allow relative humidity values to plummet below critical thresholds during the late morning hours across all of north Florida. Long durations of low humidity values are also forecast this afternoon across portions of west central and southwest Florida. Red Flag Warnings are in effect for these areas today. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies will allow temperatures to cover into the 50s this afternoon for north and north central Florida, with 60s expected elsewhere.

Residents and visitors to Florida are encouraged to be Firewise and practice fire safety with outdoor activities and indoor heating as colder than average temperatures are forecast to persist through much of next week.

Another cold night is forecast for the peninsula and portions of north Florida tonight as high pressure settles over the region. Meanwhile, a cold front currently plunging southward from Canada towards the upper Midwest states will shift winds to a southwesterly direction later tonight in the panhandle. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will begin moving inland and will prevent freezing temperatures from occurring west of the Apalachicola River, where low temperatures will range from the mid 30s inland to the mid 40s along coastal areas. A light freeze is expected tonight through Sunday morning in the Big Bend and northeast Florida, where lows will drop into the upper 20s. Portions of north central Florida and the Nature Coast may also experience a light freeze by Sunday morning, with readings forecast to fall to near freezing. Freeze Warnings are in effect for these areas, with the southern extent of these warnings covering Hernando and Sumter counties. Calm winds will allow patchy frost to form later tonight and Sunday morning across interior sections of central Florida, where lows will bottom out in the 30s. Lows will fall into the 40s in southwest Florida and the 50s for southeast Florida and the Keys.

Gusty north-northeasterly winds will persist through the early evening hours all along the states Atlantic coast and into the Keys. These winds will also push a line of showers positioned over the Gulf Stream this morning westward towards the southeast Florida coast this afternoon. A few waterspouts will be possible within these showers. Rough surf along the Atlantic coast will begin to subside tonight as winds diminish. A slight risk of rip currents continues along the southeast Florida beaches.

Showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop on Sunday ahead of the cold front across the Florida panhandle. Southwesterly winds ahead of this front will allow for a brief warming trend statewide, as high temperatures on Sunday reach the 60s over north and north central Florida. Afternoon highs may reach 70 on Sunday in central Florida and the lower 70s for south Florida and the Keys. Isolated to scattered showers will progress eastward through the rest of north and central Florida on Sunday evening as colder air begins filtering into the panhandle behind the front.
