Homeland Security

“The American people need to be assured that the government is doing everything it can to ensure peace and stability here at home as we continue to fight the war on terrorism around the globe.”

--Congressman Mike Pence

PATRIOT Act
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, through my seat on the House Judiciary Committee, I helped craft legislation to empower law enforcement in its pursuit of terrorists. The PATRIOT Act addresses several different areas of law enforcement including surveillance, intelligence gathering, computer crimes, immigration and money laundering.

The delicate balance this legislation strikes between preventing terrorism and protecting civil liberties requires strong congressional oversight as this law is implemented. The Judiciary Committee continues to receive numerous reports from Attorney General John Ashcroft detailing the implementation of the PATRIOT Act and how it is affecting civil liberties. I continue to closely monitor this situation.

Department of Homeland Security

In addition to legislation to combat terrorism, I supported creation of the new Department of Homeland Security, the largest reorganization of the government since the beginning of the Cold War. As a result, our ability to defend the homeland is more effective, efficient and organized.

The formation of the Department of Homeland Security incorporated into one coherent department the numerous agencies and government entities responsible for the security of our homeland. All agencies will be listed under four major directorates: Border and Transportation Security, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Science and Technology, and Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection.
