New Mexico, set in the southern Rocky Mountains, is probably the best-kept skiing and snowboarding secret in the west. The snow here sets the standard for powder skiing; light, fluffy and abundant. New Mexico has ten ski areas running along the mountains from Red River, Taos, Angel Fire, and Santa Fe in the north; through Albuquerque in the middle; and south to Mescalero. From wide-open green slopes to double diamond black slopes, New Mexico offers a variety of terrain for every member of the family. Ski schools offer lessons throughout the season and several areas have special programs for the kids. Snow skating, ice skating, tubing and sleigh rides are also popular activities at New Mexico ski areas. Rentals are available throughout the state.
At the end of the ski day, there is always something to do in New Mexico. Nearby historic towns, American Indian pueblos, fine art galleries, museums, shopping, restaurants and casinos offer a variety of activities for skiers and non-skiers alike. New Mexico ski areas also offer a full range of lodging including family-owned motels, inns, condos and resort hotels.
Whether you are looking for a full vacation or a quick weekend away, New Mexico is a great destination. Within a day's drive from El Paso, Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Lubbock, and within a few hours of the Albuquerque Sunport, New Mexico ski areas are easy to get to by car or plane.
