This comprehensive color handbook is about soil and plant
nematodes that are parasitic to crop plants. In order to diagnose these damaging
nematodes, associating them with crop damage is dependent on determining the
symptoms of their effects on plants or plant growth. These microscopic soil and
plant nematodes are generally not visible to the naked eye. Symptoms seen above
ground are poor growth and yield of the plants, but the specific nematode can
only be seen if examining the plant organs including the roots, rhizomes, bulbs,
corns, and tubers.
The information presented here addresses nematode damage that affects major crops including: legumes, vegetables, flowers, cereals, fruit and nut trees, tobacco, coffee, sugarcane, banana, and root and tuber crops. The book aims to help people working with these crops to identify and improve the diagnosis of nematodes of agricultural importance. Each nematode is described and specific information is provided on its distribution, symptoms and
diagnosis, damage and economic importance, management, and identification. An introductory chapter on biology and parasitism provides an excellent primer on the varying types of parasitic nematodes and their mechanisms for attacking crops.
This essential tool will be useful to a range of professionals including
growers, agricultural engineers, nematologists, entomologists, soil scientists,
plant pathology, and those working in crop protection, and related agricultural
disciplines.
