The Governor's Budget Report for FY 2010 has been released. The Sedgwick County Commissioners want to be sure all citizens are aware of the budget, as it will effect all Kansas residents, including those in Sedgwick County.

Test Smoke Detectors

Since Thanksgiving 2008, there have been 158 fatal fires in the United States and more than 200 fire fatalities.  In response to one of the most deadly holiday seasons due to residential fires in recent memory, Sedgwick County Fire District #1 asks all residents to test their smoke detectors and add detectors to parts of the home where they are scarce.  Visit Fire District #1 online for more fire prevention tips and information.

E-waste Collection

Did you get a new computer, TV or other electronic item recently?  Don't throw your old one away!  Sedgwick County is hosting an e-waste collection from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., January 24 at the Kansas Coliseum, Pavilion 2, 1229 E. 85th St. N., Valley Center, KS.  The collection is free to Sedgwick County residents and staff will be available to help unload your items!  Please no large appliances, such as refrigerators or stoves.

New Elected Officials Swear In

On Sunday, January 11, 2009, five county officials took their oaths of office, swearing to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Kansas and pledging to serve the citizens of Sedgwick County.  See photos from the ceremony.

Winter Weather

Keep abreast when winter weather comes to Sedgwick County.  Slow down when roadways become wet and temperatures are at or below freezing.  Increase your following distance of other vehicles when driving and don't lock up your wheels when breaking on slick surfaces.  For latest updates visit Sedgwick County Emergency Management's Emergency Information Log.

Rise in Burglaries and Thefts in Unincorporated, Rural Sedgwick County

Recently, the unincorporated portions of rural Sedgwick County have experienced a rise in burglaries and thefts.  The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens to practice safe behavior with the following tips:

  • Keep garage doors closed and windows, outbuildings and doors locked.

  • Make sure all ATV’s, motorcycles and trailers are locked and secured. 

  • Document possessions with photographs, video tapes, and inventory lists to include serial numbers, makes, and models.  Keep this documentation in a safe place in case of theft or fire.

  • Be observant and note any suspicious vehicles or individuals, especially vehicles that are driving slowly or stopped in areas where they do not belong.  If you observe suspicious activity, call 911 immediately.

  • The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office community liaison unit offers residential security checks to residents who are interested in enhancing the security of their home.  Citizens interested in this program can contact the community liaison unit at 316-660-3920.

First-Half Tax Billings Mailed

The Sedgwick County Treasurer, has mailed more than 254,000 2008 tax billings to the citizens of Sedgwick County.  Real, personal, utility, and special assessments totaling $553,764,197.76 were billed for the various taxing authorities (including schools, cities, townships, and county).

The payment deadline for the first half is December 20, 2008.  Taxes may be paid online using your MasterCard, VISA, or Discover card to pay your taxes. The tax deadline for second-half taxes is May 10, 2009.

According to the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA), in any given year, more than 50 million people provide some level of care-giving services.  Those services are valued at more than $306 billion dollars a year.  Family caregivers provide more than 80 percent of all home care services.  American businesses can lose as much as $34 billion each year due to employees’ need to care for loved ones who are 50 years of age or older.  Due to their additional responsibilities, caregivers often need support from other family members and friends.  Watch a short video about caring for caregivers.  Click here for more information and to learn how you can make a difference in a caregiver's life.

Sedgwick County Exploration Place

For just a few months, beginning February 28, you will join the unseen world of the awe-inspiring whales of the South Pacific at Exploration Place with the international traveling exhibition, Whales ׀ Tohorā. Exhibit highlights include:

  • Encounter two life-size sperm whale skeletons, and several other whale skulls, models and more.
  • Listen to haunting whale voices.
  • Crawl through a model of a blue whale heart.
  • Become a whale as you dive to the depths in search of a giant squid.
  • Learn about the history of whaling - including the Whale People, whale riders, authentic artifacts, and the current efforts that center on preserving the species. And more!

Winter Wednesdays are back at SCZ!
  Admission is only $2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Wednesday this winter, so bundle up and share a day with your favorite animals at the Sedgwick County Zoo.  Remember, you can warm up in one of the many indoor exhibits at the Zoo or with a cup of hot chocolate at Plaza Beastro.  And, be sure to stop by the lions' exhibit to view the two male cubs, Michael and Jamil, who were born in August!

Health Alerts

Flu Shots - Flu season is upon us and the Health Department is ready with multiple ways you can get your flu shot:

  • Mobile Clinics throughout Sedgwick County
  • The Health Department's West Central location (2716 W. Central) during hours of operation:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.

The cost for shots is $30 for adults and $15 for children under the age of nine. Check out the Health Department's Web page for more information on the seasonal flu.

Digital TV Conversion

Millions of $40 government-issued coupons are available to help citizens purchase a converter box for their older television sets that might not work after the switch from analog to digital broadcasting.  Viewers who have satellite or cable service will not need a box, but viewers who rely on antennas, for example, will need to purchase a converter box before February 18, 2009.  To request a coupon, visit www.dtv2009.gov or contact the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).
