Welcome to the Village of McFarland

Welcome to the official website for the Village of McFarland located in McFarland, Wisconsin. The Village is located along U.S. Highway 51 and the east shore of Lake Waubesa. It is located directly south of Madison, 90 miles west of Milwaukee, 150 miles north of Chicago, 100 miles east of Dubuque, and 250 miles south of Minneapolis. The Village shares borders with the City of Madison to the north, the Town of Dunn to the west, south, and southeast, and the Town of Blooming Grove to the east. McFarland is located in an expanding urban area in Dane County, where growth and development has outpaced most other metropolitan areas in Wisconsin. A strong regional economy and higher educational opportunities have spurred much of this growth and expansion during the last decade. Total population, employment, and development are forecasted to continue growing in the region over next two decades, with McFarland positioned to accommodate some of this growth in a balanced, well-planned manner.

What's New in the Village?

Scam Alert

Over the last two weeks the McFarland Police Department has taken several calls from citizens regarding checks that have been received in the mail claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House. The letter that accompanies the checks states that the recipient is the winner of the Publishers Clearing House Lottery and that the check included with the mailing is to cover taxes. The recipient is then instructed to contact the phone number on the letter to confirm with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about taxes. The check looks very real and the letter also looks genuine.

Upon calling the number the person from "IRS" tells you the lottery is real and that you need to cash the check and send the money to a place that the person from "IRS" tells you. You will be more then likely told to wire the money through Western Union. The check is not real and you are liable for the money that you use from the check.

The phone numbers that are listed on the fraudulent letters are from known Canadian scam artists and are not phone numbers for the "IRS". If you receive a letter like this please contact the McFarland Police Department at 608-838-3151 or the Bureau of Consumer Protection at 1-800-422-7128. This will allow us to forward the letter and checks to the proper authorities.

Please use caution when receiving checks that come unsolicited in the mail. For more information please visit the Bureau of Consumer Protection web site at: www.datcp.state.wi.us

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

Over the past 3 months, the McFarland Police Department has responded to several daytime burglaries. The suspect(s) are entering private residences by forcing their way in via a side entry doors or patio doors. This is a continuation of a sporadic trend of residential daytime burglaries that have been occurring over the last two years. These burglaries tend to occur in similarly aged properties that are between 20-40 years old. Although not exclusive, these factors tend to indicate that the suspects(s) are likely from the McFarland area and familiar with the door hardware associated with the properties being entered.

The Police Department would like to thank all the individuals that have called the department to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. The department continues to remind residents to please call 911 if they see anything out of the ordinary around their houses. This would include people walking through back yards, unfamiliar cars driving slowly up and down your street, vehicles parked with people in them that do not appear to belong in your neighborhood, and individuals that are knocking on doors asking odd questions. Please feel free to contact Detective Jesse Crowe or any of the police department employees with questions at 608-838-3151.
