McLaughlin and Police Commissioner Thomas R. Sofield, Sr. listen as City Manager Charles T. Theofan speaks at the press conference.

A press conference was held on December 17th at Long Beach City Hall with City Manager Charles T. Theofan, Legislators Denise Ford and David Mejias, Long Beach Council members John McLaughlin, Leonard G. Remo, Denise Tangney, Police Commissioner Thomas R. Sofield, Sr. and members of the Coalition for Underage Drinking. The group’s purpose was to remind parents that they face fines and even criminal prosecution for allowing underage children to drink at home. Long Beach was the first municipality on Long Island to craft the first social host bill to make parents responsible for underage drinking in their homes.

As City Council President Thomas R. Sofield, Jr. recently noted, “The best holiday gift you could give your children is to keep alcohol out of their reach which will keep your kids out of harm’s way. The temptation to drink is too easy if liquor isn’t sequestered in a safe place.”
