INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE

Fernley is one of the fastest growing communities in Nevada and home to the 5,000-acre Nevada Industrial Park. Located approximately one hour from world-famous Lake Tahoe and only 30 minutes from the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, Fernley offers easy access to transportation systems serving the major West Coast markets.

With the City Council’s hard work during the strategic planning process and approval of the Five Year Strategic Plan, a new optimism is growing in the heart of Fernley. People are starting to embrace a new, powerful vision of what we can become. They are beginning to understand that now can be our time.

The Strategic Plan outlines a vision and a road map for Fernley. A plan that focuses on our community, building our economy and a great quality of life in Fernley; a plan that focuses on our greatest asset, our residents – our volunteers, our youth and our community organizers. In short, we envision a city that backs down from no challenge; best evidenced by our residents’ outstanding response to the January canal breach, a city where we tell every potential new business and every potential new family, “We are Fernley and We Can.”

In June of 2008, the City of Fernley embarked upon an innovative process to link development of the annual budget with the City’s strategic planning process. Termed “Budgeting and Managing for Results,” this five-year plan lays out the City’s strategy for addressing priorities established by the City Council, as well as how funding and staffing will be directed in support of this strategy. City Council, City team members, and community leaders, worked closely with local government consulting firm, M3 Consulting, to ensure that taxpayer dollars are directed to City services that can deliver results.

Building on the number of significant changes the City has implemented over the last several years to become a more focused, outcome-oriented organization, the Mayor, Council, City staff, and community members established six key focus areas, or strategic priorities: 1. Enhance, preserve and maintain our cherished quality of life; 2. Enhance the maintenance and reconstruction of city infrastructure; 3. Encourage and endorse diversity; 4. Provide outstanding public service and safety; 5. Continued organizational development with a focus towards “Being the Best” and; 6. Ensure fiscal stability, and equity of the City's financial planning.

During the next budget cycle, we are taking another important step by aligning our budgeting practices with our strategic planning process to ensure we effectively spend taxpayer dollars. Meaning, resources will be allocated to services that best move us in the direction laid out in Five Year Strategic Plan. Included in the strategic plan are established indicators to measure our progress and the progress of city staff. This way, we can continually evaluate and improve our practices to make sure we deliver results that the citizens expect.

The City of Fernley’s Strategic Plan is a blueprint to drive decision-making and produce actions which determine what kind of an organization the City is (and wants to be), what it is that the City does (and should be doing), and why the City does it. This tool will assist us in serving our citizens efficiently and effectively and will provide visible results that enhance the vitality and quality of life in Fernley. The City of Fernley is dedicated to being a wise steward of the resources with which it has been entrusted; City officials and directors will continue to maintain and improve services, set direction, and lead Fernley as it develops into a diverse, vibrant, and progressive city.
