LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Interested in developing your leadership skills? Would you like to connect with other AmeriCorps*state, AmeriCorps*National Direct, AmeriCorps*VISTA, RSVP, Foster Grandparents, and Senior Corps members who promote service and volunteerism across Vermont? Applications are now being accepted for the VTCNCS’  SERVICE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL.

Vermont Commission on National and Community Service
Leadership Council

What is the Leadership Council?

The VT CNCS Leadership Council is a select team of national service participants (Service Leaders) from across Vermont that are interested in developing leadership skills, through creating opportunities and participating in activities that promote service and volunteerism across the state.

Service Leaders foster collaboration among national service programs by bringing together participants serving in AmeriCorps*State, AmeriCorps*National Direct, AmeriCorps*VISTA, RSVP, Foster Grandparents and Senior Corps  programs to collaborate in recruitment activities, and in planning statewide service days and training events.

VT CNCS Leadership Council Members share their service experience and promote service and volunteerism through activities such as:

  • speaking about their service experience before local community groups and schools
  • representing national service programs at tabling and other informational events such as job fairs, gap year fairs and college fairs
  • planning and promoting single-event direct service projects and/or celebration of service for AmeriCorps week
  • planning a workshop, service project or panel presentation for the Statewide Service Conference (April-May 2009)
Who can be a Service Leader?

Any AmeriCorps*State, AmeriCorps*National Direct, A*VISTA, RSVP, Foster Grandparent or Senior Corps member can apply to be a Service Leader. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of VT CNCS Commission members and VT CNCS Staff will notify selected individuals.  Selection considerations will include the following; Applicant Statement; Programmatic representation; and Geographic location of the participants

All members must be vigilant in making sure that they are first and foremost completing necessary hours to meet the requirements of their service agreement, this is particularly important for part-time members.  Service to the program and site is always the first responsibility for a participant.

Time and Service Commitment:

VT CNCS Leadership Council will have an orientation retreat and two additional training meetings focused on leadership principals and development which will be scheduled during the service year.

Service Leaders will be asked to contribute between 8 and 10 service hours per month and will work in their community to promote an ethic of service.

Service Leaders will serve 12 months or, if enrolled in AmeriCorps*State or AmeriCorps*VISTA, will serve during their full term of service.  While most of the opportunities occur during the regular work week schedule some events do occur on weekends and in the evenings.

Benefits of VT CNCS Leadership Council:

Participating in the VT CNCS Leadership Council provides the national service participant with opportunity to reflect upon his/her experience with leadership and to set individual goals around leadership development.

Service Leaders receive mileage reimbursement for attending all approved activities pursuant to the mileage reimbursement policy and additional training above their normal national service program.  Some events provide meals for participants.  However, meals will not be provided at events unless organized by VTCNCS.

Vermont AmeriCorps and A*VISTA Volunteers
Begin New Service Year

Vermont AmeriCorps and A*VISTA volunteers take their Pledge of Service
on October 4, 2007 at the State House in Montpelier.

October 4, 2007 was a special day for approximately one-hundred-thirty-five Vermonters, as new and returning members of the state’s five AmeriCorps and three VISTA programs kicked off their 2007-2008 year of service at the State House in Montpelier.

Members gathered beginning at 9:00 am and quickly filled the House Chamber as the day got underway. They were first greeted with opening remarks by Gretchen Berger-Wabuti, the Executive Director of the Vermont Commission on National and Community Service (VTCNCS),  followed by Commission Chair John Turner of the Vermont Dept. of Education. Next were some rousing words of inspiration and motivation from Commissioner Benjamin Luna, followed by the AmeriCorps Pledge of Service which was taken by all members. The Program Directors of Vermont’s AmeriCorps State, National and A*VISTA programs then gave brief, informative introductions, further educating all  members about each of their programs.

This was followed by a few minutes with MaryEllen Mendl of Vermont 211, a United Way program, and a heartfelt talk by Vermont Representative Pat McDonald, who spoke candidly about being a cancer survivor, which led into the first break-out session of the day: in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, members cut out and sewed caps for patients in Vermont who are currently undergoing chemotherapy. This service project was in keeping with the spirit of the day, and thoroughly enjoyed by all members who participated. “It was great to help someone while getting to know each other, “ wrote one member. “The service project was great, and really spoke to me, “ wrote another. “Perfect because it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”  And, “I can’t sew at all, but our hats came out beautifully.” One member wrote, “I thought it was a lot of fun, and it felt really good to know that we are making a difference.”

Governor James Douglas also stopped by to offer his expression of appreciation and encouragement to the members.   After lunch, the National Service Timeline was explained by VCSP Program Director Joan Wells, followed by the second breakout session of the day, a series of  interactive skits performed by the members themselves which was held outside in the early-afternoon sun, and led by members of Vermont’s newest AmeriCorps program, DREAM.  “Fun & productive,” wrote one member.  “Loved it!”    And, “Great discussions!”  Members from “ urban & rural parts of the state…talked about different ideas.”

All of the staff here at the VTCNCS, as well as the Commissioners,  wish our new and returning members the very best experiences in their new service year.

The AmeriCorps Pledge

I will get things done for America—
to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together
to strengthen our communities.

Faced with apathy,
I will take action.

Faced with conflict,
I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity,
I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me
this year and beyond.

I am an AmeriCorps member,
and I will get things done.
