Economic Development

The Department of Tourism and Marketing promotes Vermont as a travel destination in order to support a diverse and vital economy. The VDTM mission is accomplished through the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan that integrates television, radio, newspaper and magazine print with VermontVacation.com, the state’s most comprehensive tourism database.

The Department of Economic Development provides support for businesses and job creation by assisting with finance, permitting, foreign trade, export finance, training, business recruitment/expansion, government marketing, and captive insurance sales and marketing services. The Vermont Economic Progress Council is an arm of the department. The department also funds and supports regional economic development efforts through the Regional Development Corporations and general business development through other partners.

Historic Preservation

Vermont Life is a quarterly magazine published by the State of Vermont. It explores and celebrates the state's people, places and rich heritage. Stunning color photography and award-winning journalism make Vermont Life your insider's guide to the secret places and special character of the Green Mountain State.

The Department of Housing and Community Affairs offers a wide range of programs to further sustainable development in Vermont communities. The department is the state's central office for local and regional land use planning, state housing policy including the mobile home park program, the Vermont Community Development Program, state-owned historic sites, archeological resources, and preservation of Vermont's historic downtowns and village centers.

The Division for Historic Preservation is the public agency designated to be the advocate for historic and prehistoric properties in Vermont, ranging from 10,000-year-old Native American sites to rambling 19th century farm complexes, to railroad-spawned villages of the 1870s, to gleaming streamlined diners built to serve auto-borne patrons of the 1930s. Each of these buildings, structures, and sites is important for what it can tell us about our history.
