New solar system generates 250 kilowatts, runs 300-horsepower pumps
Lakewood's largest water reservoir now generates electricity on top of serving the city's water needs--literally. A photovoltaic solar power system covers its 194 foot diameter tank roof in the Arbor Maintenance Yard. The new solar system will provide over 250 kilowatts of electrical energy during daylight hours to power water system pumps. And the solar panels will eliminate the equivalent of 13 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the environment over the system's 30-year life.
CityTV's Community Digest news magazine recently did a segment reviewing the project.

Major broadcast television changes will impact Lakewood
The clock is clicking down for residents using classic “television and antenna” set ups to watch traditional broadcast television channels. Starting Feburary 17 they won’t be able to see their shows.
Federal mandates require all television stations in the U.S. to begin broadcasting using ONLY new digital technology at midnight on February 17, 2009. This means people using older TVs (that lack digital tuners or are not connected to cable or satellite services) won’t be able to watch television.

How does Lakewood measure up? “Green goals” are being met:
▪ Recycling used tires into street repairs since 2000 has kept nearly 1,000,000 old tires out of landfills. Nearly 90 percent of city streets – both neighborhood streets and local highways – have been repaved since 2000 using rubberized asphalt. The city invested another $2.6 million in street repairs in 2008.
▪ Over 2,000 tons of street sweepings were kept from Lakewood’s storm drains. The effectiveness of a thorough street sweeping each week increased the amount of litter cleared from Lakewood streets.
Fall Community Safety Center classes continue The fall season of programs and classes is underway at the Lakewood Sheriff’s Community Safety Center.
