Louisa County has been declared a Federal Individual (homes & small businesses) Disaster Area. Anyone that sustained damage should Call 1-800-621-3362.

If you are a rural resident of any part of Louisa County and want to be considered for a flood buyout and/or want to have your house demolished via public assistance funds, call Dan Eberhardt of the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission (SEIRPC) at 319-750-6623. Dan maintains office hours in Oakville most afternoons. Louisa County has contracted with SEIRPC to handle the potential buyouts and demolition for rural residents. For demolition, you must call Dan and he'll have you sign a right of entry form for the building inspector to see if your home is eligible to be demolished. Do this before the end of August to help meet deadlines. Also, the forms may be dropped off at the Louisa County Assessor's Office. Click here to get Right of Entry Form

If you want a FEMA trailer to put on your farmstead or lot call now at 1-866-274-4392.
The FEMA trailers are 14'by 60', have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, and come with living kit (pots, pans, plates, flatware, and bedding). The trailers require a 200 amp service since they use electric heat and need adequate septic and water hook up. FEMA will hook them up. The trailers may be used for up to 18 months ending November 25, 2009 unless FEMA extends their deadline. The supervisors on Tuesday, July 15 will be voting to wave zoning requirments for 18 months so trailers can be put on farmsteads and lots while residents are reconstructing.

Louisa County was established on December 7, 1836. According to some authorities, the county was named for Louisa Massey, who gained fame during her time because she avenged the murder of her brother by shooting the man responsible. Other historians claim the name was given in honor of Louisa County, Virginia. There are 418 square miles in Louisa County. In 1839, Wapello was named as the county seat, defeating several other towns for that honor.

The first courthouse was of cottonwood logs. In 1840, a second, one-story 40' x 20' brick courthouse was erected at a cost of $1,300. In 1854, a third courthouse, 60' x 80' was constructed at a cost of $9,577.69. Stone was used from a quarry located in the bluffs southwest of Wapello. The present courthouse was erected in 1928, at a cost of $100,000.

Louisa County is bordered on the east by the Mississippi River, and the Cedar River joins the Iowa River at Columbus Junction. Lake Odessa, the Toolesboro Mounds, the swinging bridge and many county and state areas are just a few of the things to see when visiting Louisa County.
