We are the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) an international consortium where member organizations, a full-time staff and the public work together to develop the open standards that are the foundation of the Web. We are a collaborative group of highly dedicated, creative staff and member participants seeking a Managing Director to oversee our development of protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth of the Web.





RESPONSIBILITIES: The Managing Director is responsible for the overall management of the World Wide Consortium (W3C) with the goal of furthering W3C's ability to lead the Web to its full potential. The Managing Director works with the W3C Director, staff, and membership in developing and communicating W3C's technical vision to the world.

The Managing Director leads the W3C's management team, and is responsible for W3C's strategic planning, worldwide operations and outreach. The Managing Director has oversight of all operational, financial, and legal aspects of the W3C, as well as for the hiring and management of the W3C staff. The Managing Director is responsible for management of the W3C Process (the consensus-based practice under which W3C's technical specifications are developed), and for sustaining a culture of cooperation and transparency in W3C operations. The Managing Director maintains strong working relationships with W3C's host organizations, member organizations and prospects, and coordinates with other international organizations.

REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a background in Information Technology, with an emphasis on Web technologies and a solid understanding of the Web industry. Candidates must have excellent marketing and communication skills, including public speaking experience with technical and non-technical audiences. Recognizing the international nature of the Web and of W3C's membership and staff, candidates must have demonstrated ability to function in a similar environment, optimally including strategic management of an international organization. Candidates must have proven experience managing change and in leading a distributed and culturally diverse technical team working on complex projects. Candidates must demonstrate strong human relations skills and the ability to build consensus among disparate groups. Experience with the development of open information technology standards is desired. Fluency in English is required and fluency in a second language is a plus. Advanced degree preferred; substantial experience in computer science, information sciences or a related discipline is essential. Residence in the Boston area with an ability to travel is required.

THE WORLD WIDE WEB CONSORTIUM: W3C was established in 1994 in response to growing demand for a coordination body for the rapid development of Web standards. It was founded by the inventor of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee, who continues as W3C Director, and is hosted by MIT CSAIL in the USA, ERCIM in France, and Keio University in Japan, with offices in seventeen other countries. Over the last 14 years the W3C has overseen processes of issue raising, design, consensus building and testing resulting in over 120 technical standards that make the Web work, including standards for HTML, XML, XHTML, XSL, Cascading Style Sheets, Voice XML, Web accessibility, Web Services, Semantic Web, mobile Web, Web 2.0, graphics, video and many other areas of technology.

Work Shift:
SOFTWARE ENGINEER/SYSTEM ARCHITECT, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL)-Decentralized Information Group (DIG), to serve as technical lead for research on information accountability. Primary duties will involve the implementation and deployment of systems and tools that support a novel framework for addressing privacy and other concerns about appropriate use of information on the World Wide Web and other large computer systems. Duties will also include student supervision. The background for this research is described in (Weitzner et. al., "Information Accountability," CACM, June 2008).

CSAIL is the largest interdepartmental research lab at MIT. DIG explores the technical, institutional, and public policy questions necessary to advance the development of global, decentralized information environments.






REQUIREMENTS: a demonstrated track record of successfully implementating significant computing tools for the Web; and extensive knowledge of symbolic computing techniques, programming for distributed computing environments, and web technology. Must be comfortable with a variety of programming paradigms, including functional programming in dynamic languages. Experience with Semantic Web and AJAX a plus. Must have been the principal implementer of at least one substantial system that has been successfully deployed and used by a diverse set of users in a Web or Internet environment. RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory-Biomedical Image Analysis Group, to actively pursue development of exploratory methods for characterizing fMRI activation patterns in individual subjects and in populations. In addition to carrying out independent research, will take an active role in advising graduate students and maintaining collaborative projects with clinical researchers and neuroscientists. Will also participate in writing grant applications to support the research in the group.
