LIBRARY RULES
July 2008

The trustees, administration and staff of Linda Hall Library are committed to providing excellent service to researchers in science and technology. Part of this service includes creating and maintaining an environment conducive to study and research.

To assure that appropriate conditions for research activities are maintained, the following library rules will be observed.

Failure to comply with library rules may result in loss of library privileges or the imposition of other sanctions appropriate under the circumstances.

Library users shall refrain from any behavior or conduct that disturbs the library's environment as a place for study and research.
Library users shall not treat library materials, equipment, property or grounds in a careless or destructive manner.
Library users shall permit the library staff to inspect all briefcases, packs, handbags, parcels, books and other materials when leaving the building, or when circumstances warrant such inspection.
Noise levels shall remain within the norms of typical library activity. Small study areas are provided for those engaging in group discussion.
Library users shall not enter the closed stack area or staff work areas without staff permission.
Library users shall not move furniture from study areas to stacks or aisles.
Children are not permitted in the library except under the direct supervision of a parent or other responsible adult. Children shall conform to all library rules. Children are not allowed on the balcony unattended.
Loitering or soliciting are not permitted.
Food or drink are not to be brought into, nor consumed in, the library.
Smoking is not permitted in the library.
Library telephones are for use of staff only. For exception circumstances, please see the Reference Desk.
Pets are not allowed in the library. Service animals are allowed.
The library's parking lot is to be used only by library patrons, and only while they are actually using the library. The parking lot to the east of the main building is restricted at all times to staff parking and library deliveries.
Use of the public workstations and wireless network shall conform to the library's acceptable use policy. If others are waiting for a computer you will be asked to limit your time to 30 minutes.
Library users shall not harm or harass any Library employee or member of the public.
