The Grounds

The GroundsThe Linda Hall Library’s urban arboretum was begun in the early 1900’s when Herbert and Linda Hall began landscaping the property around their new home. This tradition of thoughtful conservation and planting was embraced and carried to the present by subsequent trustees and staff of the Library.

Today, the 14 acres surrounding the Library are home to over 450 trees representing some 58 genera and 165 species. The grounds are further embellished by beds of viburnum, tree peonies and Missouri native woodland plants.

FlowerTo the casual visitor, the grounds can offer a quiet respite. For the more curious visitor, the Library has available a guide that identifies each tree. It is our hope that the former will become the latter, fulfilling our mission to be a place where learning can occur.
