The Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology and
The Spencer Art Reference Library of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
It was named for the artist/inventor Leonardo da Vinci.

| What does the LEONARDO catalog contain? |

The LEONARDO catalog contains the monograph (book) and serial (periodical/journal) records of the Linda Hall Library and
the Spencer Art Reference Library. |

| What is HIP? |
| |
| |
HIP, or Horizon Information Portal (formerly known as iPac), is the
software used to present LEONARDO to the public. HIP was created by
SirsiDynix to offer libraries access to catalogs and other resources from any computer,
whether at home or in-library. We are running version 3.x of the HIP software. |

| Where and when can I access LEONARDO HIP? |

LEONARDO HIP is located at http://leonardo.lindahall.org.
It is available 24 hours a day, except for Sunday mornings from 12:45 to 2:15 AM Central Time when the system is performing
weekly maintenance.
If the catalog will be down for an extended period of time, notices will be posted on the Linda Hall Library
and Spencer Art Reference Library webpages. |

| What is Advanced | Power Search? |

Both Advanced and Power Search let you apply pre-defined limits and sort results by specific criteria. Power
Search includes the ability to use Boolean operators like AND, OR, NOT, and XOR (either or). |

| How do I limit | sort my search? |
| |
| |
To see limits and sorts specific to your location, click on the appropriate Profile icon at
the top right of any HIP page. To see all possibilities for limiting and sorting in LEONARDO, click on
LEONARDO Profile.
Choose Advanced or Power, then scroll down to the bottom of the page. There you will find
that you can limit by location, collection, etc. and sort by publication date, author, or title. You may choose one limit by
clicking to highlight it, or choose multiple limits by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on each one.
When you are ready, enter your search term(s) at the top of the page, using the appropriate indexes. Click the arrow
or hit Enter, and you should see the results of your limited and/or sorted search.
If you want to change your sort or limit, you may do so after your search has been performed. If you choose to limit at this point,
please keep in mind that this does not further limit your search. Instead, it performs the same search with a different limit.

| What is My List? |

Viewing My List.
My List is a feature that lets you create a temporary list of items from your search results. You can view
My List, add items to or remove items from My List, and email My List.
You can also email your search results directly, without using My List. See below if you
have not received email sent from LEONARDO HIP.
You may use the citations in My List to request a copy of library materials, but emailing My List does not
automatically place an order. See below for further information on requesting
library materials.

| What does Location | Collection | Circ Type mean in LEONARDO? |
| |
| |
This information tells you where an item is located and what type of item it is. |
| |
| |
Location:
- Each library has several locations in LEONARDO.
- Location codes are in lowercase (i.e. "lhlclos"), while location descriptions begin with the
library name (i.e. "Linda Hall Library - Closed Stacks").
- The location indicates in which part of the building an item is shelved.
Collection:
- There are many different collections in LEONARDO.
- Collection codes are in CAPS (i.e. "SARC"), and collection descriptions end with the
shortened library name (i.e. "Archives - Spencer").
- A collection is a group of related items that are shelved together.
Circ Type:
- Not all items in LEONARDO may be checked out, or "circulated".
- Item circulation type codes are in lowercase (i.e. "lav"), but their descriptions end with the
shortened library name (i.e. "Audio/Visual - LHL").
- The circ type (also known as itype) determines whether the item may be circulated; it has a certain element
of format as well.

| I would like to request a copy of materials in the LEONARDO catalog. Who do I contact? |

| | Linda Hall Library: The Document Services Department is
committed to filling every in-scope, properly cited request within 24-48 hours. Requests are processed during the
local working hours of 8am - 5pm, U.S. Central Time. While there is a fee for filled requests, it is a cost recovery
fee intended to support a strong collection and dedicated services.

For Linux:

If you should choose instead to run Opera, you may want to identify your browser as the latest version of Mozilla
(do not identify as Internet Explorer). We have found that Mozilla Firefox also works well with HIP.

| I got an HTTP error when trying to access LEONARDO HIP. What does it mean? |

| |
An HTTP error may signify that the page you requested does not exist (404) or it is in a restricted
location (403). Please check your browser settings (see the question on recommended web browsers)
and ensure that you have typed the address correctly.
You may also see an error if the server is rebooting (500) or it is temporarily busy (503). Please check to make sure
the catalog is not down for maintenance (see the question on when HIP may be accessed).
If HTTP errors persist, and the catalog is not down for maintenance or upgrade, please contact LEONARDO
Support (the Linda Hall Library Systems Office,
at 816-363-4600 or 800-662-1545) with details including the date and time of your attempt. |

| I have not received email sent from LEONARDO HIP. What can I do? |

Customers of some ISPs may not be able to receive email from LEONARDO HIP in HTML format, as
these messages do not conform to RFC 1738. Plain text is the only format that is consistently accepted;
it should display correctly in any mail client.
Because of this, we have attempted to restrict HIP emails to plain text format.
Additionally, some customers may find that email from LEONARDO HIP is filtered as spam. If possible, please
add support@lindahall.org to your list of accepted addresses. |

| What is the Z39.50 protocol? |
| |
| |
Z39.50 is a an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/NISO communications
protocol. It is used to search and retrieve bibliographic data in online databases of library holdings. For more information, see
The ANSI/NISO Z39.50 Protocol at www.cni.org.
We have installed zServer Pro (a Z39.50 server) to facilitate communication with the LEONARDO catalog
using the Z39.50 protocol. This provides an alternative to searching LEONARDO using HIP. |

| How can I access LEONARDO using the Z39.50 protocol? |

This form of access requires Z39.50 client software; a list of free and commercial programs may be found at
http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/resources/software.html.
zServer Pro is available on the standard port (210) of the HIP server leonardo.lindahall.org; enter davinci
as the database code.
Using your Z39.50 client and our Z39.50 server, you may search the LEONARDO catalog and configure the display of results.
A normal search contains a search term as well as an attribute of that search term (author, title, etc.); when using the
Z39.50 protocol, the attribute is be represented by a value. In other words, there is a numeric code for each type of
index that may be searched via the Z39.50 protocol.
The attributes used by zServer Pro are:

| What hardware and software does this system run on? |

The LEONARDO catalog data and HIP software reside on separate
Dell PowerEdge
2950 servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The H in HIP refers to the Horizon library system, created and sold by SirsiDynix. Our Horizon
installation uses the Sybase database management
software. It was
recently announced
that SirsiDynix will not be going forward with development of the next version of Horizon. We are currently
determining how this will affect LEONARDO; please check back for further details. |

Get the basics:
- You'll see that it begins with the same information as the general LEONARDO URL.

This is basically the address of the server and the path to the application. Both are essential.
- The information after the question mark will vary, in content as well as order, and not all of it is necessary.
Remove the session information:
- The first bit of text after the question mark is usually the information on your session.

As this should vary with each user connection to the catalog, it is strongly recommended that you edit this out of your link.

The ampersand at the end of each string is what links the various bits together; you'll want to remove that if/when you remove
the information in front of it.
Check the profile:
- Somewhere after the question mark you'll see the code for the profile you're using.
profile=leo&
The code "leo" is for the generic LEONARDO user profile.
- For Linda Hall, use the code "lhlopen". For the Spencer Library, use the code "sarl".
Delete unused and extraneous information:
- You'll find that there are a lot of variables which are unused (nothing after the equal sign), unnecessary
(refer to the number of hits per page) or repeated (you only need one of each).

You can remove all of this information, as well as any beginning with npp, ipp, or spp.
- Remember to delete the ampersand at the end of each as well.
- I believe this only works in Internet Explorer (puts the cursor in the search box); it is extraneous.
