1/14/09: Corrections Employee selected to represent all Florida law enforcement in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games
Florida Department of Corrections employee Pat Finan has been selected as the Florida representative to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho. “When I was assigned to coordinate the department’s efforts over two years ago I thought this was just another task,” said Finan. “I never anticipated the positive impact this would have on my life.” As the agency director for the Department of Corrections, Finan has been instrumental in the Department’s contribution to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida for the past several years. 1/8/09: Notice: Norovirus at Baker CI and RMS - Visitation
Baker CI continues to have active norovirus cases. Those who are planning to visit please call first in case visiting for the weekend is cancelled. Baker staff are taking action through preventative measures to ensure sanitation of the facility is increased with the use of bleach, education of all inmates on the virus and the importance of hand washing and to let them know they may want to let their visitors know so they can make an educated decision on whether they should visit or not.
RMC West also continues to have new cases. We regret that we must cancel visitation this weekend to those visiting inmates at the West Unit. Please call if you have questions about vistitation.
1/8/09: TCC Honors Two of our Distinguished Employees - Including Secretary McNeil
Congratulations to Secretary McNeil and Correctional Services Administrator Ernetta Roberts for being selected by Tallahassee Community College (TCC) for Distinguished Alumni Awards. This Award recognizes and honors TCC graduates who have achieved significant recognition for professional accomplishments, contributions to the betterment of the community or outstanding community leadership. Roberts works in Citizens Services in Central Office. The Awards ceremony will be held February 19, 2009.
1/7/09: Department of Corrections receives $1,000 donation from Build-A-Bear Workshop Grant to assist shelter dog training programs
The Corrections Foundation recently received a $1,000 Build-A-Bear Workshop Grant to benefit the dog training programs at Wakulla and Taylor Correctional Institutions. Both the Paws in Prison (PIP) dog training program at Wakulla CI and the Undergoing Training and Obedience in Prison to Increase Adoptability (UTOPIA) program at Taylor CI have had excellent success in placing more than 100 dogs in good homes last year. The UTOPIA dogs come from the Leon Community Animal Service Center, and the PIP dogs come from Wakulla’s Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment (CHAT) facility.
The $1,000 grant will be used to purchase much needed supplies such as collars, dog food, treats, leashes and shampoo for these two DC programs helping to train animal shelter dogs for successful adoption and life-long homes. Click here to read more...
