LANL: Life at Los Alamos

Of interest to

Schools in Los Alamos

Strong academic and cultural focus, an active sports community, and a small town environment combine to make Los Alamos increasingly attractive to those wishing to relocate.

Los Alamos Schools Win Praise

The growing interest in the Los Alamos Public School system is well deserved. Each year our students score well above the national and state averages on standardized achievement tests, including National Merit competition. Our graduating seniors qualify for many academic scholarships at major universities throughout the United States. Our academic strength is also shown in the number of advanced level courses offered in English, math, science, computers, history, and foreign language. The broad-ranging curriculum also includes first-rate programs in the arts and physical activity. Teacher salaries are among the highest in the state as is the per student operational expenditure.

Guidance and Counseling

The guidance program is focused on prevention counseling, individual conflict resolution, life skills curriculum delivered in classrooms, and individual problem solving. Each school is assigned at least one counselor.

Health Services

Each school has at least one nurse assigned to manage direct services such as emergency first aid, medications, health education, and record keeping for all students. A school physician is on contract with the district to provide various consultations.

Special Education

Exceptional children benefit from the services provided for numerous situations including autism, hearing impairment, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and many others. Service levels are determined by individual student needs. Adaptive equipment (such as low vision and Braille equipment, computerized scanning/reading devices, and Alphasmarts) are provided as needed to allow special education students to participate in the general curriculum.
