Field Safety and Medical Training

CH2M HILL Polar Services (CPS), in partnership with Learn to Return, has developed a field safety training program for the National Science Foundation Arctic Program. LTR is a field safety training company located in Anchorage, Alaska (http://www.survivaltraining.com/), providing expertise in air, land, and sea safety. Courses are offered periodically during the year and include field survival training, wilderness medicine, and aviation safety. Training is free to all NSF funded Arctic Program participants and is tailored to meet specific project’s needs. If the course location is not within the driving distance of the participant, travel assistance is available through CH2M HILL Polar Services.

Potential course topics may include:

  • Wilderness medical training: (participants are awarded Red Cross Adult CPR, First Aid, and Delayed Care and Blood Borne Pathogen Certifications upon course completion)
  • Bear safety (where appropriate)
  • Food/waste handling in bear country (where appropriate)
  • Helicopter safety (where appropriate)
  • Immediate fire sources, immediate food sources (where appropriate)
  • Constructing field shelters, demonstration and practical exercises
  • Building personal survival kits
  • Principles of improvising, student improvised clothing
  • Inventory for survival, emergency priorities
  • Ropes and cord for survival, lashing techniques, attachment techniques
  • Field travel techniques
  • Equipment selection and use
  • Global Positioning System use in the field
  • Water treatment for remote locations
