WHO, WHERE WE ARE, WHAT WE DO

The Fish Management Office is part of the Northwestern Division of the US Army Corps of Engineers, located in Portland, Oregon.

The Fish Management Office, formerly the Pacific Salmon Coordination Office, was established in November 1994, to provide improved coordination and communication between the Corps and state and federal agencies, tribes, the Northwest Power Planning Council, organizations, interest groups and the general public, on actions to improve salmon passage at Corps dams. The office also provides planning and policy development, and internal coordination for the Corps salmon program.

The Corps operates eight multiple-purpose dams on the lower Columbia and Snake Rivers through which salmon migrate on their way to and from upstream spawning/rearing areas and the ocean. Adult fishways and juvenile bypass systems are in place at the dams to aid salmon passage. The agency continues to construct new fish facilities and improve existing systems, and is evaluating long-term options for further salmon passage improvements at the dams. During the spring and summer juvenile fish migration, flow and spill are increased at the dams to improve migration conditions. The agency operates two upstream storage dams used in flow augmentation during migration seasons.
