In a tree in my backyard, an immature Northern Goshawk. This is a first
sighting for this year, but I have had this as a "backyard bird" before. The
bird flew, so I'm not sure if it can be relocated. We live on 2901 Foxpoint Rd.
in Burnsville.

This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 15th 2009.

In Duluth, a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found on the 10th on Lake
Superior at 21st Avenue East. this is almost certainly the same
individual that has been present on the lake since late December.

On the 15th, there was a report of a possible GYRFALCON at the southeast
corner of Minneapolis St. Paul airport along state highway 5 at Post
Road.

A BOREAL OWL was discovered on the 11th in east Duluth along the Old
North Shore Road near Alseth Road of Stoney Point but it was gone the
next day.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the Duluth International Airport was
relocated on the 12th at Rice Lake Road, half a mile south of Airport
Road. Another was at the junction of Jean-Duluth Road and Beyer Road on
the 11th. And up the shore, a GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the 10th along
state Highway 61, half a mile north of Ryan Road. Great Gray and
Northern Hawk owls continue to be seen in the Sax-Zim Bog of St. Louis
County. Check especially along county road 7, county road 28, and
McDavitt Road.

In Lake County, an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 8th
along the walking trail at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors and it was
still present on the 10th.

In northern St. Louis County, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen on the 9th
near the Ely golf course along Lookout Ridge Road.

And in the southern half of the state, many callers have reported
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BROWN CREEPER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HOARY REDPOLL, and
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, January 22nd 2009.

It's great that all the passengers are safe after the skillful river
landing by the pilot of the US Airways jet yesterday. I am
concerned that "nuisance birds" will be blamed or that real solutions
to the bird-airplane conflict will be overlooked

I found a useful site with resources on this issue:

Last night a friend called to report an owl in his garage. I went up
to have a look and sure enough, perched on the handlebars of his
bicycle was a boreal owl! I went back this morning to see if it was
still around, but couldn't find it anywhere nearby. For anyone who
wants to have a look around the neighborhood we are in the Hunter's
Park neighborhood of Duluth (Between Hawk Ridge and UMD). Their exact
address is 2127 Sussex Avenue. They welcomed birders (but not in the
garage!).

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 15,
2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

We are in the deep freeze in most of the state, frigid in the north, but
still cold throughout. Luckily, the winds have been on the light side,
so the cold has been somewhat tolerable. With a promise of an end to the
chill, everyone is starting to perk up. It will be interesting to see if
bird numbers will change. Feeders have been busy, and sunshine
encourages both birders and birds alike.

Brad and Dee Ehlers report that about 100 TRUMPETER SWANS can be seen in
Fergus Falls, along with MALLARDS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, and AMERICAN
COOTS. Dan and Sandy Thimgan had a visit from nine NORTHERN CARDINALS at
their feeder on January 10.

Jim and Sue Thomas have a VARIED THRUSH coming to their yard at Pickerel
Lake northeast of Detroit Lakes. Shar Legenhausen observed RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, COMMON REPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS at their feeder on January
11.

From Polk County, Bruce Flaig observed 80 SNOW BUNTINGS along the
roadsides this week. Diana Morkassel saw 20 GRAY PARTRIDGE, a BALD
EAGLE, three AMERICAN CROWS, and three flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS along US
75 between Crookston and Warren on January 11.

In Pennington County on January 8, Phil McKenzie reported a WILD TURKEY
along CR 3 five miles west of St. Hilaire. Later that day, he saw 16
WILD TURKEYS along CR 12 about 3.5 miles north of CR 3.

At their place east of Warren in Marshall County, Diana Morkassel
reported BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PURPLE FINCH on
January 11. There were more than 100 ROCK PIGEONS at the Angus elevator.
Gary Tischer at Agassiz NWR reported DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER,
a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and COMMON REDPOLLS at the headquarters feeder.
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, SNOW BUNTINGS, and a small flock of LAPLAND
LONGSPURS are being seen along CR 7 and CR 12 outside the refuge.

In Beltrami Island SF,Beltrami County, last week Neal Slick observed two
NORTHERN HAWK OWLS and a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE northwest of the
intersection of Dick's Parkway and the Morehouse Road last week.
Elsewhere in the county, Katie Haws reported three NORTHERN HAWK OWLS
north of Waskish along MN 72 on January 13. She also observed PINE
GROSBEAKS at Hines, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Bemidji.

Lance Crandall reported an increase in HOUSE FINCHES at the Lake Bronson
State Park feeder this week. Several HOARY REDPOLLS were seen at the
home of Larry Wilebski in Lancaster, and at least two more were found at
his Evergreen Acres northwest of Lancaster on January 11.

From Roseau County, Beth Siverhus reported a GREAT GRAY OWL at White
Pine Loop in the Beltrami Island SF east of Dick's Parkway south of the
former Clear River Forest station on January 11.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Bruce Flaig, Diana
Morkassel, Gary Tischer, Jim and Sue Thomas, Katie Haws, Lance Crandall,
Neal Slick, Phil McKenzie, Shar Legenhausen, and Dan and Sandy Thimgan
for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru AT q.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, Thursday,
January 22, 2009.

late December. Kims group also found a HOARY REDPOLL on the 10th and
11th near 38th Street on Park Point in Duluth. Mike Hendrickson
relocated the female HOARY REDPOLL on the 15th at his feeders in
Smithville in west Duluth. Carol Tveekrem found a HOARY REDPOLL on the
15th at her feeders in Schroeder, Cook County.

A FOX SPARROW has been present for the past month at the Duluth DNR
office at 4805 Rice Lake Road (CR 4). Two AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are
also occasionally seen at the feeder, which is visible from the parking
lot. Gordy Martinson had a flock of eight BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at his home
at Oak and Maxwell Street in north Duluth. Mike Hendrickson saw a first
cycle ICELAND GULL, two adult and a first cycle THAYER'S GULL, and
several GLAUCOUS GULLS on the 10th at the Superior landfill.

Mike found a BOREAL OWL on the 11th along the Old North Shore Road (CR
290) near the Alseth Road. A dead one was found in downtown Two Harbors
on the 10th at 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street, and another was found on the
13th in Duluth near the UMD campus. The NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the
Duluth International Airport was relocated on the 12th at Rice Lake Road
(CR 4), 0.5 mile south of Airport Road. Mike Hendrickson relocated the
NORTHERN HAWK OWL at Jean-Duluth Road (CR 37) and the Beyer Road (CR
259) on the 11th. He also found a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 10th along MN
Highway 61, 0.5 mile north of the Ryan Road (CR 50). A NORTHERN HAWK OWL
was found on the 14th along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.5 mile
west of the Homestead Road (CR 42).

Most of the species of interest in the Sax-Zim bog continue to be seen
at the usual locations. Bill Tefft saw two GREAT GRAY OWLS on the 11th
along the Nichols Lake Road (CR 232) about two miles east of CR 7. Jeff
Fischer saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 10th along CR 7, 1.6 miles north of
the Sax Road (CR 28). Several observers reported the NORTHERN HAWK OWL
on the weekend of the 10th along CR 7 within 0.5 mile of the Sax Road.
Both AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were
seen over the weekendalong the McDavitt Road, 3.5 miles north of the Sax
Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES are still being seen at the deer-rib feeding
station along the Admiral Road (CR 788) 4 miles north of the Sax Road.
Andrew Longtin found a flock of more than 50 SNOW BUNTINGS along CR 133
at CR 199 near Meadowlands.

Bill Tefft and Norma Malinowski found flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS
recently along Miner's Drive and at the east end of Sheridan Street in
Ely. A TOWNSENDS SOLITAIRE was found on the 9th near the Ely golf

FINALLY! late this morning an unambiguous Hoary Redpoll showed up at
our feeders. New yardbird, and the first Hoary I have been comfortable
identifying as such. Bird was with Common redpolls and Pine Siskins, a
male with pale pink on chest and rump, very few pale streaks on sides,
no streaks on rump (unlike the other redpolls, this one did not close
the wingtips tightly across its back, giving me a clear look at the
rump), much more white edging to secondaries, and shorter appearing
beak/longer facial feathers. Got two good looks at the bird before the
whole flock took off. Refilled feeders and tossed more seed on the
ground, but the deer are back licking all that up.

Other than Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, a lone
White-breasted Nuthatch, and 4 or so Blue Jays, the 25 or so redpolls
and usually an equal number of siskins are the only regular feeder
visitors. A few days ago the first Pine Grosbeaks of the season turned
up - 3 adult males, 3 female/SY male. Our crabapple and mountain ash
trees are still full of berries, ditto for the highbush cranberry
(Viburnum) down by the trail to Fr. Baraga's Cross. We have seen no
waxwings of either species, although a friend in Tofte reported some a
couple weeks ago (unsure of species). Abundant fruit crop everywhere
this past fall so Bohemian waxwings may arrive very late winter or not
at all. No shrikes, no Gray Jays, seems like fewer Ravens, but quite a
few Am. Crows are sticking around. Bald Eagles quite common along the
shore.

behavior? Also appearing at the suet feeder was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Thursday, Jan 15, the owl was not in the box at 7:30 am.

Yesterday morning the owl had a deer mouse and a meadow vole stored in the box.
It fed on them off and on throughout the day and into the evening. It was
feeding at 10:30 pm last night. It never did sun itself or come out of the box
until after I went to bed. The mouse and vole were gone this morning. So it
seems that in spite of the -18 F temperature the owl was off to work.

I was glad a small group of owl watchers got to watch it on the video system
yesterday.

Hi Birders,

As I drove up my driveway at about 4:30 PM on Friday (1/9) five Eastern
Bluebirds landed in a small tree near the driveway. The tree is close
to one of my bluebird boxes and I think they may have been preparing to
huddle together in the box to stay warm for the night. Several years
ago on a cold fall evening I watched 10-12 Tree Swallows land on my
driveway and one by one pop into another bluebird box near my house.

Sunday (1/11) we had a flock of 75 to 100 American Robins feeding on
juniper berries on several Eastern Redcedars on our property.

We have lived here in Big Lake township for 23 years and have never
seen Bluebirds in the middle of winter!

Good Birding,

Paul Gunderson

Hello,

Does anybody have a suggestion for cheap lodging this weekend in the
Sax-Zim Bog area? My 7 year old son and I might venture up there over
the weekend and need a sleeping spot. Winter camping is an option as
well.

Thanks!

Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at 8 am, I noted the owl is
in the wood duck box visible from the
street. The owl is feeding on something in
the box. I can't tell what, as it is standing on it.
I am starting to think this owl uses the box
only in stormy weather or bitter cold.

Look through the pines at the southwest
corner of the house to see the larger pole
mounted box at the northwest corner of the house.

I will be home most of the day, so knock on
our door and I can show you the owl on TV
if it is not sunning itself at the hole when you
stop by. Sunning seems to occur between
11 am and 1 pm. Sometimes it is at the hole
from 3 pm on until it leaves the box after dark.

The SNOWY OWL previously reported was relocated today (Tuesday) around 4:30 in
the same general area as reported by Bob Ekblad. The bird was sitting on a
utility pole on 700th St., 1/4 mile east of 140th Ave. We tried for a photo but
the bird flew and landed in the open field a 1/4 mile south. With a good
spotting scope it could be a yard bird as it would only be about 3/4 mile from
my house.

Today there has been a lot of bird feeding activity. Kirsten saw an unusual
bird for us, though we have seen it before for our yard bird - BROWN CREEPER.

At 3:15 I looked out the kitchen window. I was surprised to see a Downy
Woodpecker on the south side of a tree, next to the tree, with the suet. It
wasn't moving to the suet so I suspected that a hawk was in the area. Looking
around I spotted a bird in the top of a tree, about 100 feet up and north of
the Downy Woodpecker. Examining it closely, with binoculars I was happy to
learn it was a NORTHERN SHRIKE - a new species for our yard. That makes 76
species for us since January 2000.

At around 9 AM today, a Great-Horned Owl was seen roosting in the
evergreens, along the river trail at Crosby Farm Park. It was in the
stand of trees just east of where the dirt path intersects the paved
trail. This is the same day-roost area usually frequented by a pair of
barred owls, which I last saw there in December. Knowing that GHOWs
will kill BAOWs, I'm hoping the barred have retreated safely, perhaps
across the mouth of the MN River, where there is a known nest cavity.

I was able to relocate the Snowy Owl in Dodge County that Ken Vail reported on
Saturday. Ken found it between 700th and 710th along County 3 south of
Claremont. After driving around the area this morning I was able to refind it a
mile and a half East and a mile north of the original spot. It was east of
140th (which runs parallel (North-South) to County 3) and between 690th and
700th. It was on the east side of the road and a half mile from the road,
centered in the middle of Section 35 on a white post (there is also a white
post right near the road to serve as a reference point). I first spotted it
about 9:20am. While I was watching it, the snow started coming down and the
visibility quickly deteriorated to the point where the owl was no longer
visible due to the blowing snow.

This location is very close to the area where Ken has spotted Snowy Owls the
past couple of years.

Ken, thanks for reporting your sighting.

Without repeating sightings recently reported by others, the Minn
Birding Weekends group saw a few things of note yesterday, January 11:

- A male American Three-toed Woodpecker was along the W side of
McDavitt Rd, 3.1 mi N of Sax Rd. Look for an improvised foot path
through the snow into the woods on the W side of the road; there are
also 2-3 paths on the E side of the road here. This is presumably the
same individual seen in this area previously, although I'm not aware
anyone has reported it for several days. As others have reported,
Black-backed Woodpeckers are still being seen here: we saw a female
yesterday and a male on January 10, both on the E side of McDavitt.

- Two N Hawk Owls were seen along McDavitt Rd, both ~2 mi N of Sax Rd,
where only one had been reported previously. It is possible the second
individual is the one which has been reported along Admiral Rd, 1 mile
E of here.

- We relocated a male Hoary Redpoll on Park Point in Duluth near 38th
Street among a small flock of Common Redpolls, presumably the same
bird we had seen here on January 10. This was an obvious and classic
Hoary, so the ID was straightforward and not as difficult as is so
often the case with this species.

We did not see or look for the male Barrow's Goldeneye we saw on the
10th on L Superior at 21st Ave E. Kim Eckert

It was only a few short years ago that the appearance of a single
Northern Cardinal at our feeders would occasion serious jumping up

though, they have been seen in increasing numbers in our part of the
state. But still, we weren't really prepared to have nine of them
turn up at once at our feeders Saturday evening just as the light was
fading. A thrill!

Yesterday at the bog (1-10) we had no luck with owls but did spot a Magpie. I
our search

for a Hawk Owl along Highway 7 we did come across a female moose about a half
mile

north of Sax road, she made the long drive from Minneapolis worth the time.

A song sparrow appears to have decided to overwinter in Richfield: has been
feeding under my bird feeder each day. I first saw it on Dec. 23rd. Usualy
comes late afternoon, sometimes with tree sparrows and juncos. It is a winter
"first" for me....

There were lots of birds, birders and photographers roaming Sax-Zim yesterday.
We spent the day there checking out many of the areas that have reported
sightings. The reports proved accurate.

The most abundant birds were common redpolls and black-capped chickadees with a
boreal chickadee at the feeding station with the deer rib cages on the South
Admiral Road. Northern Hawk Owls seen between 1 and 2 miles from the west end
on the Nichols Lake Road. After traveling the road twice during the day, on the
third pass at about 4:00 in the afternoon we saw two Great Gray Owls about 2
miles east of Hwy 7 on the Nichols Lake Road. A number of northern shrikes were
seen including one chasing another. Ruffed grouse were seen feeding and
roosting in trees in three places. A flock of snow buntings were seen on the
open fields along Hwy 7 south of Byrne's Greenhouse. In addition, the bird
feeders being operated for the public were appreciated and interesting.

It was a beautiful day from sunrise, to sunset, to moonrise with birds of some
type whether it was bald eagles, black-billed magpies, pine grosbeacks etc. to
be seen.

I took an impromptu trip up to Sax Zim today. While there I photgraphed gray
jays, boreal chickadee, and redpoll at the deer carcass feeder on Admiral, a
black backed woodpecker on McDavvit, bald eagle on a carcass near the
Meadowlands, and a great gray owl on highway 7 1.6 miles north of Sax Road. I
photographed the owl at around 4:40 on a telephone pole at the west side of the
road. It flew into the woods behind the poll after I watched it for a few
minutes. I ran into Kim Eckart's birding group shortly after and directed them
to where I had seen the owl.

During the day I also saw a northern hawk owl, where Kim had told me that they
had seen it, on highway 7 just south of Sax Road but it was too far way across
the field to get a picture. I also saw a black billed magpie and a brown
creeper but was unable to get a pic.

Pics will be up on the blog shortly.

Thanks,
Jeff Fischer

Hey birders,

Bob Dunlap and I sampled the avifauna of Blue Earth County today. We had some
nice winter finds and some nice non-winter finds.

Here are the highlights: Snow Bunting (100s), Lapland Longspur, Horned Lark,
Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawk, Merlin, Cooper's Hawk, Eastern Bluebird,
Hermit Thrush (see showcase for Bob's photo), Pine Siskin, Northern Flicker,
American Robin (not just a couple...we estimated >1000, mostly in Mankato and
vicinity).

Minneopa State Park has also begun its juniper removal project. It was an odd
site today to see a skidloader driving across the state park landscape.
Hopefully this will improve habitat for some prairie nesters.

Happy birding!

the field on the north west corner of that intersection basically and I had
about 50-100+ Snow Buntings flying around and picking through it.. Below is

I was out guiding this afternoon with a group of 4 birders from Indiana and
Illinois.

Highlights:
- Iceland Gull (1st cycle) WI. Landfill
- Thayer's Gull (2 adults and 1 1st cycle) WI Landfill
- Glaucous Gulls
- Northern Hawk Owl: Airport Rd and Rice Lake Rd. The owl was north of the
intersection behind some rental garages on the east side of Rice Lake Rd.

- Great Gray Owl: Hwy. 61 express lane 1/2 mi. north of the Ryan Rd. This is
the first sighting along the north shore this winter season for a Great Gray
Owl.

* Looked for the Hawk Owl on Jean Duluth Rd & Beyer Rd and could not relocate
it.

Laura Coble and I found rough-legged hawks in 3 different locations in
the vicinity of Northfield today. One cooperative bird perched for at
least 20 minutes near the roadside on Hwy. 19, just east of the
driveway entry to the boy scout camp, before lifting up and flying
east. The second one was perched on a hillside near the intersection
of 170th St. and Hall Ave., before taking off and displaying its
under-patches. The other two were perched off Co. 14, north of Sogn.

Also in the Northfield area were:
a N. shrike, near the intersection of hwy. 3 and co. 20
a kestrel, near the intersection of co. 20 and co. 22
around a dozen red-tail hawks, 6 of them in apparent pairings

A male Barrow's Goldeneye was relocated by the Minn Birding Weekends
group ~10:30 this morning on Lake Superior at 21st Ave East.
Presumably this is the same individual seen here in late December. As
we watched it among a flock of Common Goldeneyes, the flock took off
and flew in the direction Canal Park.

Also seen today was a Hoary Redpoll among a small flock of Common
Redpolls on Park Point at 38th Street, and a Great Gray Owl in the Sax-
Zim Bog at presumably a new location: along Co Rd 7, 1.7 mi N of Sax
Rd. (This was at dusk thanks to a tip from another birder whose name
we unfortunately didn't get.) Kim Eckert

On the way home today I was thinking it would be a perfect time for a SNOWY
OWL. Sure enough about 2 miles from home there was a first year male or female
atop a utility pole. I slowed down just enough to make the ID and then rushed
home and picked up my wife to come back for another look. Fortunately it was
still there, but flew within a few seconds.

Location: about 8 miles south of Claremont on County Road 3 between 700th and
710th avenues. Observed between 5:10 and 5:20 PM.
