Yesterday we had a PURPLE FINCH, which have been absent for most of the winter. Looking out my window at Stratford Point I can see the EASTERN MEADOWLARK hunkered down between some grass, seemingly not enjoying said snow. From Meredith Sampson: 01/15/09 - Old Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- 4 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Stamford, Stamford Harbor -- SNOW GOOSE migrating with small flock of C. Geese. From Joanne Luppi: 01/15/09 - Portland, Thompson Hill Rd. backyard -- 3 COMMON RAVENS eating seeds on the snow below feeders. Nice look at wedge-shaped tails when they flew. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). (Steve Ballentine) spoke to the park manager, who had gone out to try to photograph it that day but they did not find it again. They said they have not seen it since, though caretaker said they have seen them in previous years. From Carol Ansel: 01/14/09 - Mystic, Mason's Island Rd, bridge to Mason's Island -- BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, south of the causeway. I would recommend parking at Shaeffer's (closed for the season - just before the causeway) if you plan to stay for more than a minute or two, as the causeway does not lend itself to parking. St. Mary's Cemetery on Rte 1 (Quanaduck Cove) -- one lone SNOW BUNTING. From Tina Green & NHBC walk: 01/14/09 - Westport, Sherwood Island State Park -- small flock of White-winged Crossbills(3 males,4 females) feeding on spruce cones. From Dave Rosgen: 01/14/09 - Litchfield, White Hall Rd. (White Memorial's Museum Feeders) -- 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches. From David Babington: 01/14/09 - Litchfield/Morris -- driving north on RT 202 towards Litchfield this afternoon. Just after passing Mt. Tom Pond I spotted a large black bird sitting high in tree overlooking RT 202. It was a common raven. The way the bird was sitting in the tree the wedged shaped tail of the bird was obvious. The bird was most likely in a small section of Morris on Rt 202just before one goes into Litchfield. From Sarah Hager Johnston: 01/13/09 - Farmington yard -- 1 FOX SPARROW present since 01/11/09. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). While open-country owls (Snowy, Short-eared) are open for reporting on the list, this does not mean that it is fine to get too close and stress them. Just because they have not flown does not mean they are indifferent to what is going on around them. Please remain at a respectful distance and otherwise show common sense. From Hank Golet: 01/13/09 - Mystic, Masons' Island bridge -- BARROWS GOLDENEYE. Bird was by itself on the south side to the bridge until a small skiff came in from the south. It then flew to a marina that is up near town. I could still see it with my scope at that distance but only because the water was flat calm. From Neil Currie with Renee Baade: 01/13/09 - Mystic, bridge to Masons Island -- BARROWS GOLDENEYE on the opposite side from yesterday's report. From Paul Cianfaglione: 01/13/09 - Bloomfield, Reservoir #2 (behind Seabury retirement) -- 4 SNOW BUNTING, 450+ AMERICAN ROBIN (evening roost in the extensive thickets). Presumably the bird seen recently at Groton Long Point but now in a much more accessible location if it stays. This morning it was close to the bridge and giving excellent views. From Fran and Tom Holloway: 01/12/09 - Madison, Hammonasset S.P. -- one AMERICAN BITTERN, in the marsh just west of the crosswalk to the beach pavilion near the Nature Center, 1:30 pm. From Scott Olmstead: 01/12/09 - Windsor, Windsor landfill -- (1-1:30pm) quite a lot of gulls there - probably 300+. Highlights were adult Glaucous Gull (awesome!) and second-winter Iceland Gull - both birds seen only in flight. I'd bet there were more goodies to be found but all the gulls were actively moving around and it was pretty cold so I didn't stay very long. From Dan Rottino: 01/12/09 - East Haddam, yard -- YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER male. It has been coming daily to the suet feeder for a month now. We had a female before this, but haven't seen her since the male arrived From Bev Propen: 01/12/09 - Orange(?), Merrit (Wilbur Cross) Parkway, northbount exit 56 -- 12:30 PM , 5 BLACK VULTURES sitting in tree top on north side of ramp. (2) Pine Siskins are still all over the place, so much so (even had one in MY yard) that I am still leaving them out of the reports. (3) If you really want to know what is around you should be looking in CTBirds, not just this summary. All sorts of interesting birds don't make it into this summary. From Patrick Dugan: 01/11/09 - Stamford, end of Stamford Ave -- 1st winter male King Eider out by cone buoy #2. From Dorothy Wadlow 01/11/09 - Groton, Haley Farm State Park -- 1 BROWN THRASHER. From Randy Domina: 01/11/09 - East Haven, Ora Avenue/Proto Drive, landfill -- I was able to get a good look at of one of the (assumed EASTERN) MEADOWLARKS. From Jamie Meyers: 01/10/09 - Madison, I-95 around exit 60 or so -- adult GOLDEN EAGLE soaring over the highway. Old Lyme, Black Hall River off CT 156 -- 3 NORTHERN PINTAILS, two drakes and 1 hen, mixed in with common dabblers just after first light this morning. They were gone when I passed back that way around 7:45 or so. Westbrook, Salt Meadow NWR -- 2 FOX SPARROWS. From Marty Moore: 01/10/09 - Meriden, old landfill across from Meriden Airport -- dark-phase Rough-Legged Hawk, afternoon just as the snow began. From Angela Dimmitt: 01/10/09 - New Milford -- new roost site here, off Route 7, Sunny Valley Road, behind Staples, sitting warming their butts on the chimney of Party Depot and in the trees behind; up to 24 on any given day! From Chris Loscalzo: 01/10/09 - Woodbridge, at backyard feeder -- six RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. From Paul Cianfaglione: 01/10/09 - South Windsor, Strong Road -- 45+ SNOW BUNTING. From Paul Carrier: 01/10/09 - ?????, yard -- the first COMMON REDPOLL in with a flock of PINE SISKIN today at the feeder. This group of 60 Siskins grows and ebbs ever day, so I assume it is added and subtracted too daily. The ice is still persistent on our trees up here, which might be the reason these birds are wandering around for available food. Today is the first day some birch trees are semi free of ice so they can feed. From Greg Hanisek: 01/10/09 - Watertown, Black Rock State Park -- Brown Creeper. From Carl Ekroth: 01/10/09 - Ellington, yard -- male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at my suet feeder (morning). From John Oshlick: 01/04/09 - Stratford, Long Beach -- imm Glaucous Gull near first breakwater north of parking lot 12:00-1:00. Milford, Silver Sands State Park -- Rough-legged Hawk light phase. From Jamie Meyers with Jay Kaplan: 01/04/09 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -- 6 White-winged Crossbills in the pines on the west side of the park. These birds were very active and nervous and flew around a lot. Perhaps the same birds or another smallish flock was in the pines in the pavillion area not long after (around 11 AM or so). Young Iceland Gull on the rocky beach to the east of the point. Stratford, old gun club, at the very end of the hedge line along the fence -- Clay-colored Sparrow. Stratford, Long Beach -- Glaucous Gull at the end of the parking area, also had flyby American Pipits and at least one Lapland Longspur on the marsh side going down the beach. This particular longspur was in surprisingly nice plumage for the time of year, showing a lot of vestiges of summer garb. From Debby Ethridge: 01/04/09 - Stamford, clump of rocks near the Stamford lighthouse and breakwater -- at 4:30, Peregrine Falcon; flew off at 4:40. From Darryl Rathbun: 01/04/09 - Stratford, Great Meadows Marsh near warehouses -- nice, close views of 6 AMERICAN PIPTS in the fenced field and 1 light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK hovering over frozen marshland. Also another light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a tree over Lordship Blvd, but it could have been the same bird. From Carl Ekroth: 01/04/09 - East Windsor, in the triangle of Clark rd, Middle Rd and the Ellington town line -- 1 light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK this afternoon. From Diane Tucker: 01/04/09 - West Hartford, Reservoir on Farmington Avenue (Reservoir # 1, I think) -- afternoon, there was a Greater White-Fronted Goose among a flock of Canada Geese. From Danny Williams with Scott Tsagarakis: 01/03/09 - Groton Long Point, adjacent to Bluff Point S.P, Mumford Cove -- adult male Barrow's Goldeneye feeding with a raft of about forty Common Goldeneye towards the north side of the cove. However as the tide came in throughout the day the raft dispersed and we were unable to relocate the Barrow's in the late afternoon. If anyone takes a jaunt to look be advised that Groton Long Pointers are notoriously fussy (recall the Spotted Towhee) and their cops are really bored so be prepared to be questioned if one rolls by, my advice is to look from the boat launch at the end of Anchorage Circle. From Jay Kaplan: 01/03/09 - Hartford CBC Results -- 82 species, the lowest total in recent memory was due, in part, to cold blustery winds on Count Day and severe, winter weather the week prior to the Count. Several snowstorms, one of which resulted in the Count being postponed from the beginning to the end of the Count period, may have contributed to the absence of species like hermit thrush, catbird and cedar waxwing, birds that depend upon an early winter fruit supply. Count highlights included Pied-billed Grebe, Bald Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Black Vulture (a first for the Count), and Brown Thrasher. Perhaps more significant than the unusual species, were ten year record lows for a wide range of birds including Herring and Great Black-backed Gull, Mourning Dove, Downy and Hairy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, Northern Mockingbird, Dark-eyed Junco, and House Finch. Finally, for those of you who can't enough on the current siskin invasion......yes, Pine Siskins were at their highest total (138) since 1988. From Don Mitchell and Abby McBride: 01/03/09 - Lakeville -- Around 3 PM, a juvenile Golden Eagle flew over Belgo Road (on the Millerton side), flying north. From Bob Dewire: 01/03/09 - New London CT CBC -- 125 species were recorded. Highlights include 1 drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at Mumford Cove, Groton Long Point, 2 DOVEKIES seen from the ferry to Fisher's Island, and 6 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme. Also an Eastern Phoebe, 3 Yellow-breasted Chats and a House Wren. From Shaun Martin: 01/03/09- Greenwich, Grass Island -- about 40 Bonaparte's Gulls, in the grassy section of the island there was a Winter Wren, a few Siskins in the Birches. The best bird there was a Yellow-breasted Chat, who after taking my rarity mind on a wild ride with split second flashes of plumage, finally posed out in the open to eat some Bittersweet. He was almost certainly the same one seen on the CBC at Grass Island back in December. They were at feeders of at least three other houses, and in addition they were all over the road! I saw groups of 10 to 30 birds apparently pecking at gravel as I drove slowly up the hill, barely flying in time in front of me. Of course there is much more valuable, detailed information on CTBirds than makes it into that summary, so I hope you were all taking advantage of that and getting your information first hand. Note 2: Nick Bonomo reported a possible Thayer's Gull a couple of days ago from the Windsor landfill and I failed to include it in the daily report. My apologies to Nick. Note 3: Directions to the Yellow-throated Warbler in Greenwich, which I tried to assemble from posts by Brian OToole and Meredith Sampson: 64 Arch Street in Riverside. Arch St is located next to Binney Park in Riverside. Coming from Sound Beach Ave., turn right onto Wesskum Wood Road, then turn left onto Arch Street which is 2-way there. If you turn right, that section of Arch St. is one-way. To make it easier for parking, turn left just before the tennis courts and follow that roadway to it's end, then turn right onto Arch St. There's a little stone building on the right where there is a pull-out spot for parking. It's a very short walking distance back to #64. The homeowner is graciously letting birders come to see the bird but please note the following: - Do not park in the driveway. Park justpast #64 on theright next to Binney Park which parallels Arch St. Arch St is a one way road. - Walk up the driveway at 64 (tannish house)andwalk behind theleft corner of thehouse until you can see the feeders. Do not knock on the door. The bird has been coming regularlyto the suet and peanut feeders. - Please respect the owners privacy and stay at the leftcorner of the housea distancefrom wherethe windows and feeders are located. The bird can easily be seen from the cornerwithout approaching too close to the feeders. Do not go further than the first back left corner. According to the homeowners, there was an instance today, when a photographer did not respect that request. From Renee Baade with Neil Currie and Tom Hook: 12/15 - Greenwich, Riverside, 64 Arch Street -- YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER seen around 12:50. The place to look for those is on CTBirds, where most of the input for this daily summary comes from. From Mardi Dickinson: 12/11- Westport, Sherwood Island extention Exit 18 -- 9:30AM A pair of Adult SNOW GEESE with a flock of Canada Geese on the grass on Exit ramp going southbound on I-95. From Mardi Dickinson along with Frank Mantlik, Penny Solum, Patrick Dugan ,Tina Green, Larry Scacchetti, others: 12/11 - Wilton, 21 Highview Drive, backyard -- 11:30AM-3:40PM - NO VARIED THRUSH. From Frank Mantlik: 12/11 - Wilton, 21 Highview Drive, backyard -- 3 BLACK VULTURES (while not seeing the Varied Thrush). Also, I explored another nearby area-Hillside Cemetery-for the Varied Thrush. While unsuccessful, it is actually right behind (east of) the Meinhold residence (through a small swamp), and has a lot of potential. I did find small flocks of Robins, waxwings, bluebirds, and starlings all feeeding on vines of berries, especially bittersweet, down the footpath at the SW corner. Hillside Cemetery is off Rt 33. 12/11 - Stratford, Prospect Drive -- CLAY-COLORED SPARROW remains along grassy roadside fenceline just before entrance gate to Coastal Grassland Preserve (former gun club). From Dennis Elphick: 12/11 - Stratford -- SNOWY OWL 11.00-12.00am between LONG BEACH parking lot and Pleasure Beach. First put up from log and subsequently seen perched on up-turned container (just before two evergreen (juniper?) trees) both on the shoreline. "Eyeballed" across the beach ridge at latter point when looking very wet and bedraggled - as was I! Flew up on top of right hand evergreen tree and still there on my return to Long Beach parking lot and where last seen. From Nick Bonomo: 12/11 - Bridgeport, Seaside Park -- SNOWY OWL on rocks out to Fayerweather Island (far west end of park), first-winter ICELAND GULL, drake EURASIAN WIGEON, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS. From Walt Duncan: 12/10 - Danbury, Candlewood Lake -- early afternoon, one Long-tailed Duck swimming away from a group of Goldeneyes. From James P. Smith: 12/10 - Wallingford -- Richardson's Cackling Goose, 4 different birds (not associating with each other) with large numbers of Canada Geese; Whirlwind Hill/Branford Road. Greater White-fronted Goose, 1 at MacKenzie Reservoir from about 15:30hrs. Barnacle Goose, 1 at MacKenzie Reservoir which flew in from the North at 16:12hrs and was still present when I left at 16:45hrs. Very few geese were present on MacKenzie Reservoir before 16:00hrs but after that they start pouring in with about 1500 birds when I left. From Ben Skaught with Barbara Steele: 12/10 - Bloomfield, Duncaster Road -- one adult male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). "I waited 3 hours this morning and was about to call it quits when the bird showed (so prepare for a possibly long wait if you are going to go)." Note 2: Frank Manlik also pointed out two extralimital birds, a Black-headed Grosbeak in Rhode Island, and a Mew/Common Gull discovered today in Portland, Maine. Even if we don't go off seeking anything so far away, along with the Varied Thrush here it points up what a great time of year it is for rarities. Keep those eyes open! From Richard Becker with Iola Byrne (sp): 12/10 - Wilton, 21 Highview Drive, backyard -- 12:55 p.m., VARIED THRUSH excellent looks at this beautiful bird for a few minutes. From Roy Harvey with Randy Domina, Luke Tiller and Meredith Sampson: 12/10 - Wilton, 21 Highview Drive, backyard -- 11:15, VARIED THRUSH for a couple of brief but satisfying minutes. From Charlie Barnard: 12/10 - Stratford -- A very densely marked SNOWY OWL was standing on a wooden pier which extends from one of the Long Beach West cottage properties out into Lewis' Gut this morning. The bird can be viewed from behind building #650, which is the last warehouse type building at the end of Long Beach Boulevard in Stratford. A scope is necessary. This bird was much darker than the bird viewed in this area last week. From Frank Mantlik: 12/10 - Westport, Soundview Drive, Compo Beach -- 1st-winter GLAUCOUS GULL, foraging among exposed rocks of small offshore island opposite #39 Soundview Drive, 2:30 till at least 2:45 pm. This was a new Westport town bird for me, as well as a new "work" bird (#248). Westport, 260 So. Compo Rd., Longshore Country Club -- 1 imm. SNOW GOOSE feeding on the golf course with about 200 Canada geese. Among the flock of 300 Canadas in Gray's Creek (along park exit road) was a smaller goose that looked about 80% the size of the typical geese, with some shading and markings, proportionately smaller bill, etc. I don't think it is a Cackling Goose, but it could perhaps be a Lesser Canada Goose. A couple digibin photos obtained, which I hope to post on my flickr site soon. From Corrie Folsom: 12/10 - Meriden, Habershon Field Park -- 8am-1 dark phase snow goose amongst 2-300 Canada Geese. From Brian Webster: 12/10 - Milford, Silver Sands State Park -- 6 Snow Buntings. From Tina Green: 12/10 - Westport, Mill Pond -- a pair of Snow Geese with a flock of Canada Geese on the Sherwood Island side as viewed from Hillspoint Road 7:15AM. From Donna Lorello: 12/10 - Branford yard -- One single Fox Sparrow continues in Branford yard. From Dennis Elphick: 12/08 - Ashford -- 2 PURPLE FINCHES. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). Will post if the bird returns on Wednesday. All the birds seem to scatter every time a leaf blows so it would probably be best to park at the top of the cul-de-sac and walk down the shared drive. If you keep going past the first house on the right (our house), the feeder is between the house and the backyard pool, ~30 yds distance. I was thrilled to find that it had been seen earlier in the day, and though there was a bit of a wait for it to make an appearance (it is apparently sheltering in the shrubs at the front of the house now), it did eventually come out to feed a couple times, and perched in the fading sun for a few minutes in between. From Paul Cianfaglione: 12/08 - Canton, Canton Yard -- 35 PINE SISKIN; snow brought birds onto the feeder in excellent numbers, also, many of the siskins were feeding next to the house on old aster, dalia and other flower seeds........ a beautiful sight! New Haven, East Shore Park -- 1230-1315, about 6 CAVE SWALLOWS flying over the area of the sewage plant west of the brick building. They would fly around for a few minutes then dissapear for about 10 or 15 minutes only to appear again in the same area. It seems they were sitting somewhere near the plant. I found the best place to look from is the west end of the plant. Go to the beach, walk right about 50 feet then go up to the fence and grass area overlooking the settling ponds. From James P. The bird was in the Northwestern end of the marsh, almost opposite the southern radio tower on Pleasure Beach in Bridgeport. I have done a photo comparison of the back of the head of this bird with the back of the head on the bird at Long Beach about 10 days ago and they appear to be different individuals. This bird would occasionally close it's eyes completely and when it did so it became seemingly "faceless," since the eyelids were as white as the rest of the plumage. From Phil Asprelli: 12/04 - Wallingford -- 11:15AM, I'm happy to report that the Barnacle Goose is alive and well in Wallingford! I drove to E. Center St. in Wallingford on a whim and low and behold there it was in a small flock of Canadas (61) essentially under the power lines near a small pondbetween the Williams Farm and the Community Gardens (Veterans Park.)I watched the goose for 1 1/2 hours from the grassy corner of Stony Brook Rd., safely away from the traffic of E. Center St. which is narrow in this stretch. I parked on Stony Brook Rd. From Bo Hopkins: 12/04 - Stratford, Stratford Point -- One CLAY-COLORED SPARROW remains, at the western edge of the chain link fence bordering Prospect Street From Jan Collins: 12/03 - New Haven, East Shore Park -- 12:30 PM, CAVE SWALLOWS present for about 15 minutes, 1 Nashville Warbler in bushes. Meriden, Bishops Pond -- 1 NORTHERN PINTAIL. Weather & viewing conditions were ideal: clear, sunny, blue skies (30-40 degrees), light winds, frozen mud in morning, messier in afternoon. I guestimate that there about 4,000-5,000 gulls that were there and flying into & out of the landfill throughout the day. The vast majority were Herring Gulls, but there were also several hundred Greater Black-backed gulls and a handful of Ring-billed gulls. The highest numbers seemed to be present about 11am to 2pm, when the garbage trucks deliver the "goods". Many gulls were seen to fly back and forth to the west presumably to bathe and drink at the nearby Farmington River and Rainbow Reservoir. The crew leader operating one of the bulldozers, who was very welcoming to birders (who must check in at the office) told me that later in the winter there are even many more gulls that visit/feed here, "covering all the ground". About ten or more other birders joined in the search today, including Phil Asprelli, Charlie West (NJ), Kurt Muenz (NJ), James Smith (MA), Phil Rusch, Don Morgan, Edie ?, and at least 3 others. Some of my highlights: 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS (both 1st-winter, one with a large bulge on the right side of its neck), 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS (both adult), (J. Smith saw 1 ad. ICELAND GULL in the morning), 3 BLACK VULTURES (flying south at high altitude), 2 COMMON RAVENS. From Phil Asprelli with Charley West and Kurt Muenz: 12/03 - Windsor -- The Slaty-backed Gull was not seen from 8:30am until 10:30am. Simsbury -- The Calliope Hummingbird came to the feeder 3 times from 11:00am to 11:30am. When not at the feeder it was perched on a nearby branch affording good looks. New Haven, East Shore Park -- 12 Cave Swallows from 12:30 noon to 1:00pm. From Alan Strauss: 12/03 - New Haven, East Shore Park -- 9:15, 18+ Swallows. I believe they were all Cave Swallows -- if not Cave was the majority -- I saw no long tails. The birds were constantly in flight never perching. By about 9:30 the group was gone I saw they flying towards the ocean. I kept watching near the ocean and had one lone bird flying around overhead. It was a particularly dark orangy Cave Swallow. It left suddenly. About 9:45 five more Cave Swallows including one immature bird flew in and around but then left. I got fairly good locks at the birds as they flew near that brick sludge building -- near the light but never landed. From Kris Johnson & NHBC First Wednesday Walk 12/03 - Milford, Milford Pt -- 12 or so SNOW BUNTINGS. From Bev Propen: 12/03 - Milford, Milford Point, CACC -- 14 Snow Buntings. From Luke Tiller: 12/03 - Wilton, Allen's Meadow -- 5 American Pipits and a nice Winter Wren. From Cyrus Miller: 12/02 - Guilford, My back yard-- 1 late female Baltimore Oriole, eating first at the suet feeder and then at the hulled sunflower feeder, between 8 and 10 o'clock. From David Coutu: 12/02 - New Haven, East Shore Park -- ~ 12 cave swallows feeding at sewage treatment plant, 2:30PM. ********************************************************************** This CTDailyReport list is sponsored by the Connecticut Ornithological Association (COA). Fantastic views, much better than I had of the Lighthouse Point Calliope two (?) years ago. The bird has been daily since first seen a month and a half ago. Watched them feed from about 9AM to 10:30. Our counts during that period varied between 12 and around 18 Caves (feeding swallows are not easy to count). From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey AT snet.net> Date: Fri, 28 Nov 2008 22:11:26 -0500 Note: Congratulations to Nick Bonomo for finding and identifying Connecticut's first SLATY-BACKED GULL today. His serious devotion to landfill birding paid off with a major find! From Nick Bonomo: 11/28 - Windsor, Windsor-Bloomfield Landfill -- 4th winter SLATY-BACKED GULL, first seen at 10:30, and later seen by many birders thanks to the wonders of modern communication. For Nick's identification tips, directions, and (IMPORTANT!!!) instructions on proper landfill birding etiquette see: http://lists.ctbirding.org/pipermail/ctbirds_lists.ctbirding.org/Week-of-Mon-20081124/009901.html For pictures and details about identification see Nick Bonomo's blog entry: http://shorebirder.blogspot.com/2008/11/slaty-backed-gull-nov-28th.html From Patrick Comins: 11/18 - Windsor, Windsor landfill -- I arrived around 2:30 and the SLATY-BACKED GULL was present until at least 3:30. There were at least 2 ICELAND GULLS and at least one LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL present. At one point the Slaty-backed and Lesser were in the same video frame, making a nice comparison. Note: Patrick is an old hand at landfill birding, so his comments on the subject that he posted to CTBirds today are worth repeating here. "A few things to keep in mind with landfill etiquette and safety. We don't want to wear out our welcome. Please make sure to stop at the weigh station on the way in and let them know why you're there. There is an intercom and they will yell at you if you don't stop." "Stay out of the way of landfill business and any vehicles/equipment that are engaged in landfill activities. Please also don't block any active areas with your vehicle. Keep you eyes and ears open and especially stay away from the earth moving equipment. Conditions can be quite muddy on warm days." "I believe that the equipment doesn't run on weekends, so there are often fewer gulls present on weekends. This bird seems to be as happy as a gull in landfill muck, so hopefully it will hang around." From Mark Szantyr: 11/28 - New Haven, East Shore Park -- 17 Cave Swallows, 4 Red-breasted Nuthatches. Connecticut River / I-95 bridge -- Two Peregrine Falcons at the nearby utility tower. Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- two Lapland Longspurs, two Purple Sandpipers. From Paul Cianfaglione: 11/28 - Hartford, Cedar Hill Cemetery -- 5 COMMON REDPOLL. Lots of finch movement in the early morning hour along the backside of the cemetery. This area is situated on a hill next to an active quarry. Many birds land in the trees along the ridge, and many keep heading south....
