Outline

Astrophysics Focus

Focus Leader: Richard Epstein epstein@lanl.gov

Proposals are solicited with emphasis on theoretical research, observational research, and instrumentation research. General interests are multidisciplinary projects at the boundaries between astrophysics and nuclear physics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, and/or general relativity. Use of LANL facilities is highly desirable, e.g., exploitation of the Milagro gamma-ray observatory.

The following specific topics are of interest:

  • gamma ray astrophysics
  • space instrumentation
  • stellar dynamics, in particular neutron star physics and radio pulsars
  • cosmic ray, and the cosmic microwave background
  • solar neutrinos
  • primordial black holes
  • intergalactic magnetic fields
  • active galactic nuclei
  • supernovae
  • energetics of supermassive black holes
  • physics of accretion disks
  • dynamics of the interactions between superfluids and normal matter
