POSITION:  Research Associate

We are seeking a motivated and results-driven Research Associate to join a dynamic team working in our molecular marker discovery group within the Monsanto Vegetable Division in Woodland, California. The ideal candidate should have a solid understanding of molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics. The position requires strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a team environment and facilitate complex projects under the direction of the marker discovery lead scientist.

Responsibilities:

  • Exploit data analysis of traditional Sanger sequencing as well as next generation sequencing technologies.

  • The successful candidate will work in a cross-functional matrix environment, interacting with members of Breeding, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Breeding Technology organizations.

Required Skills/Experience/Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience in molecular biology, genetics, plant science or related fields; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Previous training in molecular biology or plant genetics is highly desirable.

  • DNA extraction, PCR, gel and capillary electrophoresis, simple cloning, sequencing and primer design skills.

  • Familiarity with basic MS office programs (Word, Excel and Access).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Skills/Experience/Attributes:

  • Ability to work with large and complex projects.

  • Experience with protocol development.

  • Sound understanding of bioinformatics and sequence analysis.

Less than 10% travel time is expected within this role. Relocation benefits are available to the qualified candidate.
