POSITION:  Research Scientist, Sugar Beet Breeding - Recurrent Selection and Resistance Breeding

KWS Saat AG is one of the most innovating plant breeding companies in the world. Rich in tradition, we have been developing, breeding and distributing varieties for modern agriculture for over 150 years. We specifically focus in the production of sugar beet, corn and grain seeds as well as oil crop seeds. Our core markets are situated in moderate climate areas with an emphasis on Europe and North-America.

We are offering two positions for a Research Scientist, Sugar Beet Breeding (f/m) - Recurrent Selection and Resistance Breeding

In Germany alone the sugar beet breeding program of the KWS encompasses over 10,000 m2 greenhouse breeding acreage, 24,000 separate parcels on a good 80 ha and over 30,000 of selfings per year. The KWS offers engaged and highly motivated employees diverse and challenging tasks with development potential in the area of seed parents and resistance. For anyone, who takes pleasure and interest in the development of new varieties and their market success, this position will offer you an exciting challenge.

Your responsibilities:

  • Support the area of sugar beet breeding through breeding improved varieties

  • Leading breeding projects within the framework of worldwide breeding programs

  • Development of variety components or development of variety components with specific resistance properties

  • Evaluation and consideration of a mass of data and their processing for the breeding selection

  • Optimizing of breeding programs under the consideration of new technologies (genomics, molecular marker)

  • Working together with the international sales and marketing team

Your Profile:

  • University degree in natural sciences, preferably with a focus in plant breeding

  • Strong knowledge in Genetics

  • Fundamental knowledge in molecular Marker, strong knowledge and practical application in molecular marker desirable

  • Knowledge of plant breeding, minimum theoretical (corresponding courses in general Plant breeding and/or Population genetics and/or Qualitative genetics)

  • Practical experience in plant breeding and in plant cultivation trials and experience in the leading breeding programs would be advantageous

  • Experience in statistical method

  • Experience in handling data bases in order to deal with large amounts of data (MS Access or similar)

  • Proficiency in English language, orally and written, minimum basic level German language

  • Solid user knowledge of MS office

FOR THE RESISTANCE BREEDING:

  • Knowledge and experience in Phytopathology, work with plant diseases and resistance testing is desirable
