  • Where can I find information about a specific wilderness area including current weather, recommended trails, trail conditions, regulations (i.e. can I bring my dog?, can I have a campfire?, do I need a permit?), fire restrictions, fees and permits, campsite reservations, hunting, wilderness maps, trail maps?
ANSWER: Specific wilderness pages contain a wealth of information can be accessed through the wilderness area map search. From the national map, click on a state to drill down to the state map, then on a wilderness area to drill down to an individual wilderness area page. For wilderness maps, trail maps and recommendations trails or trips, you will need to contact the managing agency of the wilderness directly, since Wilderness.net does not provide this information. To contact the managing agency office, click on the "Contacts" tab, if available (click here to see what this looks like). For those areas without a "Contacts" tab, links to managing agency websites, where contact information can be found, are provided under the "General" tab (click here to see what this looks like). Regulations are listed under the "Area Management" tab (click here to see what this looks like). Other tabs including "Recreational Opportunities", "Climate/Special Equipment Needs", "Directions", and "Safety/Current Conditions" are also listed for some wilderness areas.
  • How do I contact the managing office for a wilderness area?
ANSWER: See the answer to the first question above to learn where office contact information is located.
  • Where can I get a wilderness or trail map?
ANSWER: Wilderness.net does not provide maps of individual wilderness areas or trails. See the answer to the first question to learn how to obtain maps by contacting the managing agency.
  • The area I want information on isn't a wilderness area. How can I find out about it?
ANSWER: Since Wilderness.net has information on wilderness areas only, you will need to look elsewhere to find information on other type of public lands including National Forests, National Parks, state and local parks, National Monuments, National Wild and Scenic Rivers, National Recreation Areas etc. Visit http://www.recreation.gov for listings of other types of federal, state and local public lands.
  • Where can I find wilderness GIS data?
ANSWER: Wilderness GIS data is available on the National Atlas website. You can also visit the National Atlas map maker to map wilderness areas in addition to other layers (water bodies, roads etc.) of your choice. Click on the "Search map of wilderness areas" link on the Wilderness.net home page, then click on the "National Atlas Map Maker" link just above the national or state maps.
  • Where can I get a wilderness-related job or internship or find funding or grants?
ANSWER: Wilderness.net does not offer employment opportunities unless we have special project needs. Click here to visit our wilderness links section where you'll find links to local advocacy and educational organizations to begin your job or internship search.
