Laboratory, LANS develop new mentor-protégé agreements
July 8 — Los Alamos National Security, LLC recently entered into mentor-protégé agreements with two Northern New Mexico businesses, North Wind, Inc. and Performance Maintenance Inc. (PMI), under the auspices of a Department of Energy mentor-protégé program.

Los Alamos names new head of stockpile manufacturing and support
January 22 — Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio has named Carl Beard as the new associate director for stockpile manufacturing and support.

Los Alamos Wins Two Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards
September 24 — Two technologies developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the areas of energy and semiconductor research are among the winners of the 2007 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards.

Laboratory Researcher Awarded Bronze Star for Service in Iraq
August 24 — U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Tod Caldwell, a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Iraq.

Laboratory technologies capture R&D 100 awards
July 9 — Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory won two of R&D Magazine's prestigious 2007 R&D 100 Awards. The latest winners bring the Laboratory's total to 105 awards received since the Laboratory began entering innovations in the competition in 1978.

Deputy and Principal Associate Directors named
June 13 — Laboratory Director Michael R. Anastasio today has filled two high-level positions: Jan A. Van Prooyen has been named deputy director and Mike Mallory principal associate director for operations and business services.

Sue Stiger to manage environmental cleanup at Los Alamos National Laboratory
April 19 — Sue Stiger has been named associate director for environmental programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory, announced Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio.

Los Alamos scientist wins prestigious physics award
March 22 — Distinguished theoretical physicist and senior Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellow Hans Frauenfelder has been named one of three 2007 Willis E. Lamb Award winners for Laser Science and Quantum Optics at the 37th Physics of Quantum Electronics (PQE) Conference.

Laboratory staff earn 17 communication awards
March 1 — Los Alamos National Laboratory writers, artists, and graphic designers won seventeen Society for Technical Communication awards in the 2006 Southwest Regional Publications, Art, and Online competitions.

Three Los Alamos scientists named Fellows of American Association for the Advancement of Science
December 12 — Three Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Nine Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists honored as American Physical Society Fellows
December 1 — Nine Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists were selected as Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS).

Sudbury Neutrino Observatory wins first Polanyi Award
November 15 — Scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory are part of an international collaboration of researchers at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) receiving the inaugural John C. Polanyi Award for its groundbreaking research on neutrinos.

Los Alamos names 2006 Laboratory Fellows
September 11 — Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio today announced the selection of five exemplary scientists as Laboratory Fellows.

Los Alamos and Sandia to dedicate Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies
August 16 — Los Alamos National Laboratory is hosting a ceremony to dedicate the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Facility.

Los Alamos captures five 2006 R&D 100 Awards
July 5 — Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory captured five 2006 R&D 100 Awards presented by R&D Magazine.

Laboratory receives 32 Society for Technical Communications awards
February 21 — Los Alamos National Laboratory publications received 32 awards in the 2005-2006 Society for Technical Communications Southwest Regional Publications, Art and Online competitions, including Best of Show in the publications competition.

Los Alamos receives five pollution prevention awards from NNSA
February 15 — Los Alamos National Laboratory received three Pollution Prevention Best-in-Class awards and two Pollution Prevention Environmental Stewardship awards from the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Los Alamos scientist Li is Asian American of the Year
February 14 — Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Ning Li has been named 2006 Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers-USA (CIE-USA).

Laboratory's Johnson selected as region's financial executive of the year
December 9 — Jay Johnson, Los Alamos National Laboratory's chief financial officer, recently was selected as the Institute of Management Accountants' 2005 Financial Executive of the Year for IMA's Rocky Mountain Region.

Los Alamos weapons program employees receive DOE / NNSA Awards of Excellence
November 7 — The outstanding achievements of more than 300 Los Alamos National Laboratory employees were recognized by The Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) last week with Defense Programs Awards of Excellence.

Six from Los Alamos named 2005 AAAS Fellows
October 31 — The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society, and publisher of the journal, "Science," has named six current and former Los Alamos National Laboratory employees as Fellows for 2005.

Kuckuck names seven new Laboratory Fellows
September 29 — Recognizing the highest levels of technical accomplishment at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Director Robert Kuckuck has named seven distinguished scientists as Laboratory Fellows.

Two Laboratory technologies receive nanoscience awards
July 21 — Two technologies developed by University of California scientists working at Los Alamos National Laboratory have been named winners in the 2005 Nano 50(tm) Award competition by Nanotech Briefs, a digital publication from the publishers of NASA Tech Briefs.

Laboratory captures four R&D 100 Awards
July 1 — Scientists at the University of California's Los Alamos National Laboratory have captured four of R&D Magazine's 2005 R&D 100 Awards. The latest winners bring the Laboratory's total to 87 awards over the past 18 years.

Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund awards scholarships
April 6 — Santa Fe High School senior Taryn Flock is the recipient of the four-year, $10,000-a-year platinum scholarship from the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund. The fund is administered through the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation.

Los Alamos scientist named Asian American Engineer of the Year
February 24 — A University of California scientist working at Los Alamos National Laboratory widely known for his innovations in the field of electronic materials and high-temperature superconductivity has been named the 2005 Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers USA (CIE/USA).

Wojciech H. Zurek named Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar
February 16 — Physicist Wojciech H. Zurek of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division was named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2004-05. Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and largest academic honor society. Its Visiting Scholar Program serves to enrich the intellectual atmosphere at participating institutions.

Four Los Alamos physicists honored by American Physical Society
February 15 — The American Physical Society has honored four Los Alamos National Laboratory physicists for their outstanding contributions to physics, naming them fellows of the society. Steve Elliot, David Montgomery, David Moore and John Singleton were among 201 scientists nationwide elected as American Physical Society fellows in 2004.

Associate Director Marquez named HENAAC Luminary
November 17 — Richard Marquez, Los Alamos National Laboratory's associate director for administration, was named a 2004 Luminary by HENAAC, a non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting careers for Hispanics in engineering, science, technology and mathematics.

Laboratory scientist receives prestigious nuclear physics award
January 3 — Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist, J. David Bowman has been awarded the Tom W. Bonner Prize in nuclear physics. Granted annually by the American Physical Society, the Bonner Prize is the top American nuclear physics award. This is the second time that a Los Alamos scientist has received this honor.

Laboratory's Greg Swift honored by Acoustical Society of America
August 14 — Physicist Greg Swift of the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory will receive the Silver Medal in Physical Acoustics from the Acoustical Society of America.

Director selects newest Laboratory Fellows
August 7 — Los Alamos National Laboratory Director John Browne has selected four Los Alamos researchers as Laboratory Fellows, the Laboratory's highest scientific honor.

Los Alamos to offer small business technology subcontracts; conference set for March 7
March 3 — A Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory conference next week will help Northern New Mexico high-tech small businesses apply for technology maturation and commercialization subcontracts. The conference, sponsored by the Industrial Business Development's Technology Commercialization Office, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Los Alamos Inn.

Los Alamos awards innovators and entrepreneurs
March 2 — Researchers at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory who received patents or copyrights in the last year were honored at the Laboratory's Patent and Licensing Awards Ceremony last night. The ceremony also honored employees whose inventions generated license royalties and those who exhibited outstanding entrepreneurship.

Seven Laboratory researchers named APS Fellows
January 14 — Seven researchers at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS). This year, Los Alamos had more researchers inducted as APS Fellows than any institution in the world. The new Los Alamos APS Fellows are Greg Canavan, Alan Glasser, Terrance Goldman, Richard Hughes, Michael E. Jones, Albert Migliori and Seppo Penttila.

Director selects newest Laboratory Fellows
November 1 — Los Alamos National Laboratory Director John Browne has named Aloysius Arko, Shiyi Chen, Shimshon Gottesfeld, Steve Lamoreaux, and Robert Weaver to the position of Laboratory Fellow, the Laboratory's highest scientific honor

Los Alamos' Jill Trewhella elected AAAS Fellow
October 27 — Jill Trewhella of the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. AAAS is a nonprofit professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific and technological excellence across all disciplines, and to the public's understanding of science and technology. AAAS membership comprises more than 143,000 scientists, engineers, science educators, policymakers and other professionals worldwide. As a Fellow, Trewhella joins an elite group of about 10,000 of the nation's leading researchers.

Sattelberger selected new Lab division director
October 8 — Al Sattelberger of the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory has been named director for Los Alamos' Chemical Science and Technology Division.

Frauenfelder named to Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
March 10 — Hans Frauenfelder, director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, was recently elected to the position of Foreign Member to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden.

Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers honored by the American Physical Society
February 16 — Los Alamos National Laboratory staff members Joseph Carlson, Chris Hammel, Patrick McGaughey, Robert Robinson and Harvey Rose, have been elected 1998 fellows of the American Physical Society.

Lab names new Cyril Smith Scholars
January 20 — Davis Tonks, Fred Steinkruger, and Alexander Balatsky have been named Cyril Smith Scholars for the 1999 term at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory

Los Alamos selects new biological threat reduction program manager
October 4 — Gary Resnick has been named manager of the Biological Threat Reduction Program at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory. Los Alamos'program in Biological Threat Reduction aims to reduce the possible threat of biological agents from terrorist groups or third world countries.

Los Alamos selects director for Earth and Environmental Sciences
August 21 — Associate Laboratory Director for Strategic and Supporting Research Tom Meyer has announced the appointment of Paul G. Weber as division director of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, effective Aug. 27.

Los Alamos picks Beason for Threat Reduction Science and Technology lead role
August 1 — J. Douglas Beason, a physicist and Fellow of the American Physical Society, is the new program director for Threat Reduction Science and Technology at the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Laboratory researcher named AGU Fellow
March 5 — Michelle Thomsen, a scientist at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a selection based upon her pre-eminence in science.

Space Center at Los Alamos names Funsten as new leader
February 7 — Physicist Herb Funsten has been chosen as director of the Center for Space Science and Exploration at the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Six Laboratory researchers named APS Fellows
January 10 — Six researchers at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society. The new Los Alamos APS Fellows are Lev Bulaevskii, Paul Ginsparg, Beverly Hartline, Michael J. Leitch, Ferenc Mezei and Darryl Smith

Susan Seestrom named new Physics Division director
November 21 — Susan Seestrom has been named director of the Physics Division at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory. Seestrom previously served as deputy group leader of the Neutron Science and Technology group and shared responsibilities as acting Physics Division Deputy Director with Edward Heighway.

Los Alamos names science advisor for bio-threat and bioscience
October 27 — Scott Cram is the new science advisor for development of bioscience program opportunities at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory. In this role, Cram advises and supports both the Threat Reduction and Strategic and Supporting Research directorates.
