Financial Literacy: Are We Improving?
For the first time since the Jump$tart Coalition® began
to measure the financial literacy of high school seniors in
1997, average scores have stopped falling and appear to have
turned around. Lewis Mandell, Ph.D., professor of Finance
and Managerial Economics, SUNY Buffalo, and author of this
important new book, believes that the turnaround is not only

Rethinking
Home Economics:
Women and the History of a Profession
(no longer available through AAFCS, see information below)
Edited by Sarah Stage and Virginia B. Vincenti
This landmark volume initiated collaboration among home
economists, family and consumer science professionals, and
women's historians. Rethinking Home Economics documents
the evolution of a profession from the home economics movement
launched by Ellen Richards in 1909 to the modern field renamed
Family and Consumer Sciences in 1994. The essays show the
range of activities in the field, from dietetics to parenting,
teaching and cooperative extension work, to test kitchen and
product development. Explores the ways gender, race, and class
influenced women's options in colleges and universities, hospitals,
business, industry, and government, and the strategies women
used to overcome obstacles to gain legitimacy. Sarah Stage
is Professor and Chair of Women's Studies at Arizona State
University, West. Virginia B. Vincenti is Professor of Family
and Consumer Sciences and Associate to the Dean for Special
Projects, College of Agriculture, at the University of Wyoming.
