Digging Deeper Front CoverDigging Deeper: Integrating Youth Gardens Into Schools and Communities
A Comprehensive Guide
By: Joseph Kiefer & Martin Kemple, forward by Alice Waters, Author/Chef, Chez Panisse Restaurant

A cornucopia of practical ideas for educators interested in making learning come to life for their students.

Alice Water writes in the Forward "As educators from Socrates onward have recognized, the goal of education is not the mastery of various disciplines, but the mastery of one's self. Being responsible to one's self cannot be separated from being responsible to the planet. I know no better way to get this lesson across than through a school curriculum in which food takes its place at the core level. From the garden and the kitchen and the table, you learn empathy -- for each other and for all creation... A curriculum that teaches these lessons gives children an orientation to the future -- and it can give them hope... Digging Deeper is an invaluable guide toward the realization of this mission."

A Patch of Eden
America's Inner-City Gardeners
By: H. Patricia Hynes

Patch of Eden Front Cover

40% DISCOUNT

To judge from the TV news, our cities have become a morass of drug addiction, brutal crime, and official corruption. Out of the spotlights' glare, however, in every metropolitan area of the country, city dwellers have been planting flowers, vegetables, trees, and herbs-with astonishing results. These community gardens may be modest in scale, but their contributions to the rejuvenation of America's inner cities must not be overlooked.

The gardeners of these "patches of Eden" include children and elders, immigrants, and "low-income and no-income people." And their gardens are overflowing with healthy food and beautiful flowers-dramatic evidence of an entirely new kind of ecological devotion, one expressed not in expeditions to the wilderness but in the transformation of blighted lots into green sanctuaries. A Patch of Eden celebrates the achievements of the inner-city gardeners, relating in detail the stories of community gardens in Harlem, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

GROWING COMMUNITIES

Growing Communities Front Cover Growing Communities: How to Build Community
Through Community Gardening

by Jeanette Abi-Nader, David Buckley, Kendall Dunnigan and Kristen Markley

ACGA's publication, Growing Communities Curriculum, provides an in depth exploration of the practices and strategies community organizers can use to develop dynamic leaders and create strong programs using a participatory approach to community building. This 300+ page curriculum builds on the work of Cultivating Community and years of ACGA experiences, especially those of our From the Roots Up mentorship and training program.

This invaluable resource presents ten core principles of community building (chapter 1) that form the foundation for a participatory approach to leadership, community and organizational development. Strategies for implementing these principles are then discussed in terms of community organizing at the community garden level (chapter 2) and in how to create and strengthening a community garden organization (chapter 3).

Accompanying each of these core chapter concepts are a set of workshop curricula that walk the reader through the process of conducting a training on each topic. These curricula are based on workshops developed and presented by professional trainers. To strengthen the impact of these workshops, information on adult learning and workshop facilitation (chapter 4) is included. Finally, the Growing Communities Curriculum includes an appendix with resources lists, handouts and other useful information.

NATIONAL COMMUNITY GARDENING SURVEY (1998)

ACGA Monographs

Over the years, the American Community Gardening Association has published a number of research monographs on a variety of topics, for the purpose of increasing the body of knowledge about community gardening, community gardens and community gardeners in North America.

National Comm Gar Survey front cover National Community Garden Survey 1998

The factors that determine why a garden lasts are complex and difficult to capture in a brief survey. It is hoped, however, that at least a record of which gardens are lasting can be made, and point to some possible relationships. The survey is an attempt to record a snapshot of today's community garden condition across the country, particularly with the changes in policy and funding that have been occurring since the 1980s. It will also provide comparative information to a previous survey. The national survey was mailed to more than 40 cities, to people on the ACGA organizational member list and included managers of gardening programs, cooperative extension departments, recycling programs, greening programs and various other garden related agencies. This survey is an excerpt from Suzanne Monroe-Santos' thesis on longevity in urban community gardens and is being published as one of a series of monographs by the American Community Gardening Association.

People with Dirty Hands front cover People with Dirty Hands
The Passion for Gardening
by Robin Chotzinoff
(Hardcover)

There's no better antidote to the dreary non-gardening months than a great read, and in this gallery of colorful portraits, Chotzinoff, a columnist for Garden Design, delivers one of the most amusing, eclectic gardening books in recent memory. Curiosity led her to some unusual corners of the U.S.-locales as different as a Louisiana bayou, a New Mexico chile farm, an elegant Virginia estate and Manhattan's wild underbelly to name just a few-where she met with diverse and offbeat gardeners to find out what makes them tick. The result is a series of lively and highly entertaining interviews. Her subjects, sensing a kindred spirit in Chotzinoff, prove a winningly chatty group, and the author makes the most of their willingness to run on about their individual passions-be they rustling roses in Texas, collecting heirloom seeds or growing prize-winning giant tomatoes with names like "Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter." Pull the chair up closer to the fire, sit back and enjoy the company. This group is sheer delight.
