Signature Facility workshop starts Monday at LANSCE

By Steve Sandoval

March 16, 2007

Laboratory employees can learn more about the two dozen proposals submitted to a committee for a planned Signature Facility at Los Alamos at a workshop starting Monday.

The two-day workshop is in the Louis Rosen Auditorium of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at Technical Area 53.

At the workshop, presentations on pre-proposals will be made by technical staff members to a panel of Laboratory Fellows, associate directors and members of the Science Council.

Some of the pre-proposals for a signature facility are in the areas of information science and technology, computational engineering, lifecycle engineering, long-pulse spallation, materials at extreme conditions, L-PARC, cosmo-climatology, green building, biosecurity, environmental issues in national security, and integrated materials characterization.

The idea of a signature facility for research at Los Alamos was introduced by Principal Associate Director for Science, Technology, and Engineering Terry Wallace in an all-employee memo and at an all-employee meeting March 6.

The purpose of this facility, according to Wallace, is to provide tools that allow the Laboratory to address the critical scientific questions relevant to current and future Laboratory missions. Some key characteristics of a signature facility are to

1. Support the investigation of a broad range of scientific questions relevant to the Laboratory's core missions.
2. Deliver significant science and push the limits of science.
3. Serve as a magnet to attract students, post-docs, collaborators and visitors.
4. Be flexible enough to accommodate future scientific needs.
5. Build upon the Lab's experience in experimental science, theory and modeling.
6. Be a symbol of the Laboratory's commitment to developing and applying the best science to national security needs.

Lab employees can watch the workshop on LABNET Channel 9 and on desktop computers using Real Media Stream or IPTV technology.
