March Connections newsletter now online

March 16, 2007

A message from Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio on actions the Lab is taking to address security challenges, and information about the latest community leaders survey are just some of the stories in the March issue of the Connections newsletter.

Connections, a newsletter to the community, is published monthly by the Community Programs Office (CPO). Connections is distributed to local and state elected officials, and community and business leaders across Northern New Mexico. This issue also includes a note from Community Programs Office Director Lillian Montoya-Rael, photos and links to longer versions of news stories, and to Web pages that contain additional information.

Anastasio noted the security incident last fall in describing what the Lab needs to do to win back the trust of Congress as well as local community leaders. "It's clearer than ever to me and my management team that the future of this Laboratory and its neighbors are intertwined. Many of your citizens are our employees, and many of your businesses supply us with critically needed products and services," Anastasio said. "We share a long and proud history of service to the nation. We also share a future that, with your help, we can control and shape so that we can continue to effectively and efficiently meet our country's security needs."

Laboratory scientists Malcolm Andrews and My Hang V. Huynh recently were named E.O. Lawrence award winners by the Department of Energy. Read about this recognition and their work in this month's Connections newsletter. More information also is available in the February 12 Daily NewsBulletin.

The Community Programs Office annually asks local community leaders to rate the Lab in a number of areas of mutual concern. The results from the latest survey are summarized in this issue of Connections.

Laboratory employees always have reached out to help others in need. Recently, the United Way of Northern New Mexico recognized the Laboratory for being the largest contributor to its recently completed campaign. This issue has information and a picture from a recognition ceremony held at Central Avenue Grille.

Want some Pi? Science educators at the Bradbury Science Museum served up some mathematical Pi at Pi Day earlier this week. The event is designed to help visitors explore the connections between math and science. Read about this effort in the March Connections newsletter, and see Thursday's Daily Newsbulletin.

Some 200 Lab employees want to help build houses, assist the elderly, work in soup kitchens or pick up trash in community clean-up days. They've also signed up to learn about volunteer opportunities through the new VolunteerMatch program. Read about VolunteerMatch in the March issue of Connections.

Connections also publishes a list of upcoming events in local communities.
