Lab seeks applicants for Machinist Apprenticeship Program

By Sallie Boorman

March 7, 2006

The Laboratory, in collaboration with Northern New Mexico College, is accepting applications through Friday for the Machinist Apprentice Program (MAP). Individuals selected for the program will start their apprenticeship in August.

The Machinist Apprenticeship Program, an 8,000-hour program, provides apprentices with classroom instruction and on-the-job experience in machine tool operations. Apprentices will work under a professional machinist and receive the education and experience required for certification from the New Mexico State Apprenticeship Council as journeyman machinists. Apprentices also receive a salary during their tenure, according to the MAP salary structure and budget.

The Lab restored the Machinist Apprenticeship Program five years ago to relieve the need for certified machinists at the Lab. Apprentices are regularly hired as full-time machinists at the Lab after the completion of the program.

The Machinist Apprenticeship Program is open to all Lab and non-Lab U.S. citizens over 18 years old, and applicants must be able to obtain a Department of Energy Q clearance. Applicants should have a high-school diploma and an aptitude in mechanics/machining.

For information on application requirements and processes, contact Mollie Spaulding of Weapons Manufacturing Technologies (MSM-6) at 7-9979, or write to map_@lanl.gov by electronic mail. Application information can be submitted to Spaulding at Mail Stop D471.
