Is hydrogen a viable, alternative energy source? Are the technical and economic barriers to development of hydrogen as an alternative fuel insurmountable? These and other questions will be discussed at a talk Oct. 13 at the Bradbury Science Museum. The talk begins at noon and is free and open to the public.
Lorna Greening, an energy and natural resource economist, will give the talk, “Hydrogen: A viable energy source for the future?” Her talk is co-sponsored by the museum and Los Alamos Women in Science.
Hydrogen has been proposed as a solution to declining domestic resources of fossil fuels and environmental problems, such as climate change and air quality. But difficult technical and economic barriers need to be overcome before the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a fuel in the United States, according to Greening. These include the cost and the length of time needed to make the transition, whether the supply of hydrogen will be more secure than conventional methods, and whether hydrogen really can produce lower emissions as hoped.
Her talk will focus on these questions and also examine the trade-offs between costs, environmental emissions and security considerations.
Greening has more than 25 years of experience in the energy industry, including experience in consulting, research, academia, the public utility industry and the petroleum industry as an exploration geologist. She has expertise on domestic and international energy supply and demand, air and water quality and regulation.
Greening’s current research focuses on energy system modeling of U.S. energy policy and the role of new technologies or alternative forms of energy.
The Bradbury Science Museum is located at 15th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Museum hours apart from special events are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday.
