August 1, 2005

Officials from the Laboratory, the University of California, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation and New Mexico State University will be in Española this morning to sign an agreement creating a new master of arts degree program for teaching of math and science. The degree program is designed exclusively for teachers in the Northern New Mexico Math and Science Academy.

The signing agreement is scheduled for 9 a.m., in the cafeteria of Española Middle School on Hunter Street. The master of arts degree in teaching of math and science will be offered by New Mexico State University, with participating teachers working at Math and Science Academy locations. More than 50 Math and Science Academy teachers will be signing up for the degree program and coursework will be conducted via a three-week summer institute plus tele-learning during the school year.

The Northern New Mexico Council for Excellence in Education, of which Los Alamos is a member, started the Math and Science Academy in 2000 with support from the Laboratory, the Laboratory Foundation, several school districts, the Northern Network for Rural Education and a number of private and government entities. The Math and Science Academy began with 12 math, science, language arts and social studies middle school teachers from three districts. The academy has since been expanded to five Northern New Mexico school districts with 86 teacher participants.
