Contact: Jim Danneskiold, slinger@lanl.gov, (505) 667-1640 (04-157)

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., July 15, 2005 — MEDIA ADVISORY

An expert on energy issues from Los Alamos National Laboratory will talk to members of the Rio Rancho Rotary Club at noon on Tuesday, July 19.

Media representatives are welcome to attend the talk on "Energy Security: The Role of Nuclear, Fossil and Renewables in Our Future" by Dana Christensen, who heads the Laboratory's Nuclear Technology Applications program.

The Rio Rancho Rotary meets at Your Place or Mine restaurant, 3301 Southern Blvd., S.E. in Rio Rancho, between Golf Course Road and Rio Rancho Boulevard. Media representatives who wish to attend should call Jim Danneskiold in Los Alamos Public Affairs at 505-667-1640.

"It's clear that if we are to meet our energy demands and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we must use all the available sources of energy and increase the roles played by renewables and nuclear energy," Christensen said.

Christensen has 27 years experience managing programs in material science, nuclear energy, fossil and renewable energy, nuclear materials processing and scientific research. The office he leads oversees much of the civilian-based nuclear technology research activities at the Laboratory, including nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel cycles, waste management, isotope research and production, and nuclear physics associated with the transmutation of unwanted nuclear materials. He holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from New Mexico State University and is a registered professional engineer.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, is operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, a team composed of Bechtel National, the University of California, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, and the Washington Division of URS for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
