The Laboratory's annual Memorial Day breakfast sponsored by the Veterans Committee is Thursday morning in the Otowi Building cafeteria at Technical Area 3.

“Memorial Day is a time to honor those Americans who have died while defending our country and our freedoms,” said Allyn Pratt of the Security and Safeguards (S) Division Office, chairperson of the Lab’s Veterans Committee. “If you are unable to attend the breakfast, please join us in paying tribute to all of our nation’s veterans, and their commitment to protecting America’s freedoms, by observing a moment of silence at 8 a.m.”

U.S. Marine (Ret) Major Frank Pearce is the keynote speaker at the breakfast, which is open to all Laboratory workers. Pearce will speak at about 7:15 a.m., on “For What Reason.” Pearce is acting deputy group leader for Deployed Services (S-9) and directs the establishment and deployment of senior security advisers, division security officers and classified media library custodians.

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (HR-OEOD) co-sponsors the breakfast and talk.

There are about 1,000 University of California Lab employees who are veterans and numerous other veterans among subcontract personnel, said Pratt.

The Laboratory is closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.
