For employees pining away for the “good old days” when there was a parking lot east of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3, those days are returning. On Monday, the new $5.6 million parking structure on the corner of West Jemez Road and Casa Grande Drive will open for employee and visitor parking — 11 months ahead of schedule. A ceremonial ribbon cutting is scheduled for Monday morning. Employees and visitors can park in the garage before the ribbon cutting.
The new combination parking structure and adjacent surface parking lot accommodates 678 new parking spaces, 412 more vehicles than the old lot it replaced.
Even despite record breaking wet weather months, high winds and various roadblocks, the Project Management (PM) Division and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. transformed the corner from a badly deteriorated surface parking lot 12 months ago to a state of the art parking structure and new surface lot, according to Project Manager Keith Orr of Deployed Services (PM-DS).
In the course of building the new structure, the following milestones were recorded:
* Total hours worked through March on the NSSB Project- 249,456 without a reportable occurrence
* Cast-in-place Concrete piers - 67
* Cubic yards of concrete placed - 4,073
* Pieces of Pre-cast concrete - 443
* Tons of asphalt placed - 1,170
* Cubic Yards of dirt moved - 16,133
