Second Los Alamos to Albuquerque bus added

By Steve Sandoval

January 13, 2004

All Aboard America has added a second Los Alamos to Albuquerque commuter bus in response to requests from Laboratory workers who live in the Duke City.

The service, which is operated for the New Mexico Department of Transportation (formerly the New Mexico Highway Department), now will have buses that leave the Laboratory’s East Jemez Road and Diamond Drive shuttle bus lot at Technical Area 3 at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. The two buses will arrive at the state agency’s Albuquerque district office at 6:15 and 7:15 p.m., respectively.

The transportation department’s Albuquerque office is located on the north Interstate 25 frontage road north of San Antonio N.E.

The Albuquerque to Los Alamos commuter bus service provides Laboratory workers an additional commuting option from Albuquerque.

No changes were made to the early morning schedule: the bus will still leave Albuquerque at 4:45 a.m., stopping in Santa Fe at 5:30 a.m. and arriving in Los Alamos at 6:30 a.m.

The Albuquerque to Santa Fe route costs $4 each way.

There are two other buses that depart from Albuquerque at 5:45 and 6:45 a.m., however, they don’t travel to Los Alamos. Lab workers who live in Albuquerque can take the 5:45 a.m. bus if they miss the 4:45 a.m. bus and would have to make arrangements to catch another Santa Fe to Los Alamos bus and pay a separate $2 fare.

The service between Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Española has been operating since May and averages about 3,000 riders a week, according to statistics from the Public Transportation Programs Bureau of the state transportation agency. The fare for these routes is $2 each way.
