New technician training program

Representatives from Los Alamos National Security, LLC and the Laboratory presented a check for $100,000 to UNM-LA for a new technician training program in the applied sciences in the areas of manufacturing and nanotechnology.

The college and UNM Los Alamos signed an institutional agreement creating the program, in which the university will train students to become technicians and allow students to easily re-train in a new concentration area by taking only a few additional courses if and when they desire.

Students will be required to participate in a service learning project connected to their area of study, which will help produce community-minded employees who value volunteerism and civic-engagement. The program also includes core academic courses in math, science, computer science, English and communications, and technical courses such as drafting, electromechanical machines, materials science, and electronic devices.

The funds will help pay for a technician training program in the applied sciences. The new program will help the Laboratory meet future workforce needs in the areas of manufacturing and nanotechnology. UNM-Los Alamos hopes to begin offering courses this fall.
