Last chance Tuesday for a free flu shot

October 29, 2007

Laboratory employees have one more opportunity to get a free flu shot. From 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Occupational Medicine, the last available vaccine will be administered and no additional vaccine is expected.

All shots are given at Occupational Medicine (Building 1411) at Technical Area 3. Ample parking is available.

Any employee with a badge is eligible to receive a shot, including subcontract personnel. All workers will be required to read and sign a consent form before they can receive a flu shot. In addition, women who are pregnant will need a written note from their personal physician before receiving the vaccine. People who are allergic to chicken eggs, egg protein, or have sensitivity to Thimerisol (a preservative in contact lens solution) should not receive the vaccine.

The vaccine prepared for the 2007-08 season will include strains of influenza viruses that are equivalent to the annually recommended strains: one influenza A (H3N2) virus, one influenza A (H1N1) virus, and one influenza B virus.

Only the H1N1 strain was changed for the recommended vaccine for the 2007-08 influenza season, said Terese Ford of Occupational Medicine.
