There are a Million Reasons to Give

The Laboratory's 2008 United Way giving campaign begins September 17 with a kick-off event outside the National Security Sciences and Otowi buildings.

Employees can make a difference in the lives of others by participating in the campaign, which runs through October 19. Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which operates the Laboratory, plans to match employee contributions up to $1 million.

"This year's theme, 'There are a Million Reasons to Give,' is symbolic of the LANS commitment to benefiting the Northern New Mexico community by matching Laboratory employee donations, dollar for dollar, up to one million dollars," said Lillian Montoya-Rael, Community Programs Office (CPO) director. "It also represents the millions of ways our employee's contributions can continue to provide critically needed services to children, seniors, and families in our communities."

At Monday's kick-off event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., employees and the public can hear live acoustic guitar and vocals by Gary Vigil, buy books from Books are Fun, and purchase a long-sleeve t-shirt with the Laboratory's logo on the front and a quote by Manhattan Project pioneer Richard Feynman: "No problem is too small or too trivial if we can really do something about it" on the back for a suggested donation of $18. Employees can purchase a hamburger, chips, and drink from ARAMARK for $5, and meet representatives from the United Way of Northern New Mexico and United Way of Santa Fe County and their member agencies, said Debbi Wersonick of Community Programs, campaign coordinator.

The book fair will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., September 18-20 in the Otowi Building cafeteria side rooms.

Wersonick and Johnnie Martinez of Community Programs are scheduled to talk about this year's campaign at 7:30 Thursday morning on KRSN AM 1490.

Campaign pledge materials are being delivered to Lab employee mail stops this week. Employees who don't receive pledge materials by September 24 should contact Community Programs at 5-4400.

Last year, Laboratory employees donated $725,000 to the Northern New Mexico United Way and the United Way of Santa Fe County. The amount was matched dollar-for-dollar by LANS.

Laboratory workers can pledge to the United Way campaign online beginning Monday. LANS employees with CRYPTOCards can make donations by going to http://unitedway.lanl.gov online. Lab workers also can pledge to United Way through payroll deduction. Or they can write a check to United Way, attach the check to the pledge card and return it to Mail Stop P232 through interoffice mail.

Midway through this year's campaign is the annual United Way Fall Fiesta October 17 on the lawn at Central Park Square downtown. This year's theme is "WAY out West." Read the Daily NewsBulletin for more information about this event.
