Burnt Butte Cinder Pit Expansion Project

This is an existing cinder pit that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) uses as a source of sanding aggregate to keep the highways safer during the winter months. Last fall ODOT drilled sample cores in the pit to determine the best locations to obtain more cinders. The project will expand the pit and provide up to 20,000 cubic yards of cinders per year for the next ten years. There is a need to provide the cinders for the safety of the traveling public. Cinder removal is expected to begin in Fall 2006. For further information on this project, please contact Catherine Callaghan, Realty Specialist, at 541-947-6326.

Burnt Butte Cinder Pit Expansion Project:
More information is needed for the public to make informed comments on this project. How big is the pit now? How much will it be expanded? How much additional ground disturbance is expected? Will trees need to be cut for the expansion? If so, how many and how big are they? We would be concerned with this project if it involves removing any trees larger than 21" dbh, or a large number of trees of any size. Be sure to both disclose and analyze the impacts of the expansion on soil, water, and vegetative resources. Be sure also to survey and buffer for sensitive species in the area. If there will be significant impacts, you must do an EA or EIS for the project.
