The Fremont-Winema National Forests offers many activities such as hiking, biking, camping, birding, cabins rentals, scenic driving, cross county skiing, snowmobiling, mushroom harvesting and firewood gathering. Many of the facilities and services associated with these opportunities are free. However, some do require fees or permits to help maintain, manage and improve the amenities that you enjoy. Forest Products Permit Information

Permits are required for some uses on the Fremont-Winema National Forests and may require a fee. The fee varies depending upon the type of permit needed. Permits are not required for Wilderness travel, but some regulations do apply.

  • Firewood Cutting Permits - A firewood cutting permit and load tags are required to cut, gather, and transport firewood. The fee is $5 per cord, with a 4-cord minimum and a maximum of 8 cords per household per year. Some free use permits are also available. Permits and maps showing where firewood can be obtained are available at all Forest offices.

  • Mushroom Gathering Permits - Free use and commercial permits are available at all Forest offices. The fee schedule varies, depending on species. Contact the Forest offices for more specific fee information and availability of product.

  • Christmas Tree Permits - Christmas tree permits are available beginning the last week in November. The fee is $5. Permits and maps of cutting areas are available at all Forest Offices, the Mountain Market in Chemult, and the Oregon Avenue Shell & Food Mart in Klamath Falls.

  • Other Forest Products - Permits can be obtained at Ranger District Offices for other products, such as pine cones, boughs, transplants, etc. Contact each Ranger District for more specific information.
