FEBRUARY 2008 IS AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH |

During National African American History
Month, we honor the achievements of African
Americans and recognize our continued responsibility to strive for
equality for all our citizens.1
According
to the 2000 U.S. Census, those who identify as Black or African
American (alone or in combination with another race) constitute
approximately 12.9% of the American population -- about 36.4 million
individuals.2
The Census Bureau projects that by the year 2050 there will be more
than 61 million African American individuals in the United States,
comprising 14.6% of the population.3
Despite great improvements in the overall health of the nation,
health disparities remain widespread among members of racial and
ethnic minority populations.4 |
