EPA Advisory Group on Sustainability

Robert Anex, ISU agricultural and biosystems engineering and associate director for research for the Bioeconomy Institute, has been named to the Science and Technology for Sustainability Subcommittee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Board of Scientific Counselors.

Performance excellence award

ISU's Facilities Planning and Management has received an Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence Award (silver achievement level) for the fourth year. The awards, selected by an executive council of IRPE, the governor's office and the Iowa Quality Center, recognize businesses for reviews of their leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, human resources focus, process management and business results.

AAAS fellows

Four ISU researchers have been named fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for their "scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications." The four are: George Kraus, University Professor of chemistry and IPRT director; Surya Mallapragada, professor of chemical and biological engineering; Kenneth Moore, professor of agronomy; and Klaus Schmidt-Rohr, professor of chemistry. Outstanding scholar

Levon Esters, assistant professor of agricultural education and studies, was named the Outstanding Beginning Scholar by the Association for Career and Technical Education REsearch. The honor recognizes outstanding scholarship in teaching, research and service in career and technical education.

Lifetime achievement award

Harold Crawford, agricultural education and studies emeritus professor, was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. The regional honor acknowledged Crawford's career as a secondary agriculture instructor, college professor, department head, associate college dean and his continued work in retirement.

Predoctoral internship program in psychology accredited

ISU Student Counseling Service's predoctoral internship program in psychology has received full accreditation from the American Psychological Association. The training program has been fully accredited by APA since 1980; the current designation is valid for the next seven years. APA accreditation requires a year-long peer review process, submission of an extensive self-study and an on-site review by APA. Hill honored by chemical engineers

James Hill, University Professor and chair of chemical and biological engineering, has received the F.J. and Dorothy Van Antwerpen Award for Service to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Hill is regional editor of Fluid Dynamics Research and a former AIChE board member.

USDA Advisory Committee member

John Lawrence, ISU Extension livestock economist and economics professor, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Agriculture Statistics by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer. The committee advises the secretary and the National Agricultural Statistics Service on the conduct of agricultural censuses and surveys. It consists of 25 members serving two-year terms who represent varied agricultural disciplines and interests.

ASHE award recipients

Distinguished Professor John H. Schuh and assistant professor Lori Patton, both in educational leadership and policy studies, received awards during the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) annual conference Nov. 5-8. Schuh received the Research Achievement Award, which is presented to an individual whose published research advances the understanding of higher education in a significant way. Patton received the CEP Mildred Garcia Award for Exemplary Scholarship, which was named in honor of Dr. Mildred Garcia, a scholar whose contributions as a leader in higher education continue to raise the bar for both academicians and administrators.

ISU agronomist named new editor of Crop Science

Mark Westgate, professor of agronomy, was named editor of Crop Science, the flagship journal of the Crop Science Society of America. His term begins Jan. 1, 2009.

State professor of the year

Tom Greenbowe, chemistry professor, was named the 2008 Iowa Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The award recognizes professors for their influence on teaching and their commitment to undergraduate students. More.

National committee appointee

Micheal Owen, professor of agronomy, has been appointed to the National Research Council's Committee on the Impact of Biotechnology on Farm Economics and Sustainability by the National Academies. During one-year terms, the 10 members of the committee will assess the impact of genetically modified crops on ag sustainability at the farm level.

Teaching excellence award

Richard Schultz, a natural resources ecology and management professor at Iowa State, received one of six regional awards for teaching excellence Nov. 9. As a recipient of a United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award, both Schultz and the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences received plaques at an awards ceremony during the annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges in Chicago. The college also received a $2,000 award to strengthen instructional programs.

Iowa Women of Innovation awards

Three Iowa Staters recently won Iowa Women of Innovation Awards from the Technology Association of Iowa. "These women are advancing technology in Iowa," said Leann Jacobson, the association's president. "Their innovations enhance our communities, businesses and our lives in countless ways." Iowa State's winners are: Jacqueline Shanks, professor of chemical and biological engineering, for research innovation and leadership; Andrea Spencer, director of the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa and Extension program specialist, for academic innovation and leadership in secondary education; and Julie Rursch, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering, for collegian innovation and leadership.

Percy wins Whiting Award

Benjamin Percy, assistant professor of English, has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2008 Whiting Writers' Awards. The awards, $50,000 each, have been given annually since 1985 to writers of exceptional talent and promise early in their careers. More.

Three named to national air quality task force

Three ISU faculty members have been appointed to a national air quality task force. Hongwei Xin, agricultural and biosystems engineering; Robert Burns, agricultural and biosystems engineering; and Jerry Hatfield, National Soil Tilth Laboratory and agronomy, will serve on the Agricultural Air Quality Task Force. Educator award

David Block, professor of architecture, received the 2008 Educator Award from the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The award recognizes contributions to architectural education in Iowa. More.

Medal of honor

Mark Engelbrecht, College of Design dean and professor of architecture, was awarded a medal of honor by the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The award recognizes distinguished service to the profession. More.

Fulbright Scholars

Mufit Akinc, professor of materials science and engineering in the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant. He will lecture on processing of advanced materials at Turkey's Koc University in Istanbul. Three researchers will visit ISU as Fulbright Scholars: Ehab Abdel Rahman Hasan Abu-Basha (Jordan University, Iribid); Adebowale Titilayo Ajuwape (University of Ibadan, Nigeria); and Yury Chendev (Belgorod State University, Russia).

Advisers of the Year awards

The University Academic Advising Committee announces the recipients of the 2008-09 Advisers of the Year awards. A College Adviser of the Year is selected by each of the Iowa State colleges. The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost selects two people for the Iowa State University Award for Academic Advising Impact. Board-certified physicians

Malhar Gore, Pauline Miller and Cosette Scallon, physicians at the Thielen Student Health Center, have successfully completed the recertification exam of the American Board of Family Medicine. Recertification by the board also includes 300 hours of continuing medical education over the past six years and possession of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States during that time. The family medicine board is one of 24 member boards (and the second largest) of the American Board of Medical Specialists. More.

Blackboard honors four from ISU

Randy Dalhoff and Pete Boysen, both of Information Technology Services, and Travis Kramer, Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, won the annual Blackboard Community Collaboration Award. Blackboard is the parent company of WebCT. This team of three played an integral role in collaborating with the community of Blackboard users and developers to further develop WebCT.

Blackboard also recognized ISU lecturer Shu-Hui (Susan) Chang for her Computer Literacy and Applications course, which Blackboard considers to be examplary for its development and interaction.

ISRA president-elect

Craig Anderson, distinguished professor of psychology and director of ISU's Center for the Study of Violence, was recently elected president-elect for the International Society for Research on Aggression (IRSA). Anderson will serve as president-elect for two years, and then as president for two years. Founded in 1972, IRSA is an international, interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the study and dissemination of information on the causes and consequences of aggressive behavior and violence in all of its forms and contexts.

Iowa State's Hieber receives national honor

J. Elaine Hieber, ISU athletics, will be honored as one of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators's (NACWAA) 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. More.

Klaas receives conservation award

Dr. Erwin Klaas, retired professor of animal ecology, has won the Hagie Heritage Award from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The foundation presents this award annually to an individual with extraordinary service and commitment to Iowa's environment.

Receives ASAS award

John Mabry, professor of animal science and director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, received the Animal Industry award from the American Society of Animal Science. The award recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry.

ASAS honors Rothschild

Max Rothschild, C.F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture, M.E. Ensminger International Chair, director of the Center for Integrated Animal Genomics, and U.S. Pig Genome Coordinator, received the Bouffault International Animal Agriculture award from the American Society of Animal Science. The award recognizes ASAS members who have made meritorious scientific contributions through teaching, research or other service to animal agriculture in at least one developing area of the world over the past five years.

McKean recognized by industry magazine

James McKean, University Professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine and associate director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, was name a "Master of the Pork Industry" by National Hog Farmer magazine. The selection recognizes McKean's impact on the industry as a visionary in the pursuit of excellence.

Akinc is ASM fellow

Mufit Akinc, professor of materials science and engineering, has been elected to the College of Fellows of ASM International of The Materials Information Society. The election honors those whose experience represents the best in materials research and technology.

Excellence in procurement award

For the fourth consecutive year, Iowa State's purchasing department has received the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Purchasing Institute. The award recognizes organizational excellence in procurement.

ASM International fellow

Mufit Akinc, materials science and engineering professor, was elected a fellow of ASM International. The society for materials scientists and engineers honored for his contributions in ceramics and alloy powders, as well as his leadership in materials education.

5th straight honor for Piscitello

Treasurer Joan Piscitello has been named to the Association for Financial Professionals Honors Program for the fifth straight year. The honor recognizes professionals who have reached the top of their fields of treasury and corporate finance.

Biotechnology Council names new members

Bill Beavis, professor of agronomy; Richard Martin, professor of biomedical sciences; Matthew Rowling, assistant professor of food science and human nutrition; and Jacqueline Shanks, professor of chemical and biological engineering, have been selected to serve three-year terms on Iowa State's Biotechnology Council. The council makes recommendations to the Office of Biotechnology on program activities supporting biotechnology research, education and outreach.

President elect of NATS

Donald Simonson, professor in the department of music and theatre, was installed as president elect of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) at its recent national conference in Nashville, Tenn. He will serve as president elect until 2010 when he becomes president of the association.

State Historical Society appointment

Jason Follett, program coordinator in the curriculum and instruction department and university teacher education program, was reappointed to the State Historical Society of Iowa board of trustees by Gov. Chet Culver.

Dairy science leader

Donald Beitz, Distinguished professor of animal science, was named president of the American Dairy Science Association.

Ag and bio engineering fellow

Hongwei Xin, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, was named an American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers fellow. He was recognized for his leadership in teaching, research and outreach.

Governor's task force members

Jason Follett, program coordinator in both the curriculum and instruction department and the University Teacher Education Program; and the library's Hilary Seo, head of the preservation department; and Tanya Zanish-Belcher, head of the special collections department; have been appointed to the Rebuild Iowa Task Force on Cultural Heritage and Records Retention. This is one of nine task forces created by Gov. Chet Culver to help guide Iowa's disaster recovery efforts and long-term rebuilding.

American Statistical Association fellows

Dan Nettleton and Yongzhao Shao, faculty members from the department of statistics, will be named fellows of the American Statistical Association (ASA) in August at the organization's annual meeting in Denver. ASA honors only one-third of one percent of its members as fellows each year.

Honor Award for Applied Research

The International Water Association has awarded a research team led by Hans van Leeuwen, a professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, an Honour Award for Applied Research as part of the association's Project Innovation Award Program. The research team is focused on using fungi to clean up and improve the dry-grind ethanol production process. Other researchers working on the project are Anthony L. Pometto III, a professor of food science and human nutrition; Mary Rasmussen, a graduate student in environmental engineering and biorenewable resources and technology; and Samir Khanal, a former Iowa State research assistant professor who's now an assistant professor of molecular biosciences and bioengineering at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. They'll be honored during the International Water Association World Water Congress in Vienna Sept. 10.

Dean's Chair for Distinction

Manjit Misra, director of the Seed Science Center and the Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products at Iowa State University, has been named the Dean's Chair for Distinction in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. As holder of the Dean's Chair for Distinction, Misra will expand his international activities related to seed biosafety and work on enhancing the curriculum for the new graduate program in seed technology and business. He will continue to lead the Seed Science Center and the Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products, two units supported by the College.

Facilities management achievement

Chris Ahoy, associate vice president for facilities, has received the APPA President's Award for exceptional achievement in facilities management and outstanding contributions to the association. APPA is the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, formerly known as the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Universities and Colleges. Ahoy is an APPA Fellow and immediate past president of the association.

Chemistry honor

Pat Thiel, Distinguished Professor of chemistry and Ames Lab division director for science and technology, received the 2008 Honorary Member Award from the Iota Sigma Pi national honor society for women in chemistry. The prestigious honor is awarded every three years and includes Marie Curie on its list of past recipients.

Perks for Peers award

The department of Environmental Health and Safety was awarded the "Perks for Peers" Award from the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association. This award was received for ISU's Automated External Defibrillator Program.

Teaching award

Steven Lonergan, professor of animal science, received the distinguished teaching award from the American Meat Science Association. The award recognizes excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate meat science courses.

Mechanics and control of flight award

Ping Lu, professor of aerospace engineering, received the 2008 Mechanics and Control of Flight Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was honored for his work in advanced guidance algorithms for entry and ascent flight.

Hospitality, tourism excellence

The International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education honored four Iowa Staters for excellence in the field. Robert Bosselman, professor and chair of apparel, educational studies and hospitality management, received the Howard B. Meek Award for outstanding lifetime contributions. Associate professors Haemoon Oh and Miyoung Jeong, and professor Ann Marie Fiore collaborated to earn the award for best research paper of the year.

National Association of Educational Procurement board president

Nancy Brooks, director of purchasing, was elected 2008-2009 board president of the National Association of Educational Procurement. NAEP represents the procurement profession in higher education and affiliated institutes.

Iowa State: Best place to work

Iowa State has been voted "Best Place to Work in Story County" by Ames Daily Tribune readers. The Tribune has been running its "best of" series since 2000, but this is first year for the "best place to work" category.

Materials research award

Dan Shechtman, Ames Laboratory research scientist and professor of materials science and engineering, received the 25th Anniversary Award from the European Materials Research Society. It is the highest award given by the group and recognized Shechtman's discovery of quasicrystals.

Elected fellow

Lester Wilson, University Professor of food science and human nutrition, was elected a fellow of the Institute of Food Technologies for contributions to the food science and technology field. Wilson's expertise is in soymilk and tofu processing, quality and safety.

Distinguished teacher

James Kliebenstein, ISU agricultural economics professor, has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA).

Prevention science award

Richard Spoth, director of the Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute, has received the 2008 Prevention Science Award from the Society for Prevention Research for outstanding contributions to advancing the field of prevention science. Spoth also has received a letter of commendation from the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for his work in the institute's underage drinking initiative. That work included a review of evidence (in a supplemental issue of the journal Pediatrics) from preventive interventions designed to address underage drinking.

Safety, health and environmental awards

Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance, received the Campus Leader Who Cares award from the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association. EH&S earned an award of recognition for its pandemic flu emergency plan, and an award for its automated external defibrillator program in the Perks for Peers competition.

Oil Chemists Society awards

The American Oil Chemists Society honored several ISU faculty from the food science and human nutrition department. Lawrence Johnson, professor in the Center for Crops Utilization Research, was presented the Richard Baldwin Award for distinguished service, and shared the Archer Daniels Midland Award for best journal paper in proteins and co-products with University Professor Pat Murphy and former post-doc Nicolas Deak. University Professor emeritus Earl Hammond was honored for 50 years of lipid research.

Communicator of the Year

Cory Harms, ISU purchasing, received the National Association of Educational Procurement's Neil D. Markee Communicator of the Year Award. This award recognizes the NAEP member who made the most outstanding contribution to the profession during the year through written or spoken word.

Wetland science merit award

Arnold van der Valk, professor of ecology evolution and organismal biology, earned the 2008 Society of Wetland Scientists Merit Award. The award recognizes outstanding research, achievement or contribution to wetland science.

Award of Excellence

Christopher Seeger, assistant professor of landscape architecture and ISU Extension landscape architect, has received the 2008 Award of Excellence from the Iowa chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a Merit Award in communication from the society's Central States conference. The awards recognize his development of an interactive online geospatial tool used by a Seattle architecture firm to collect public input at a series of charrettes focusing on infrastructure and design plans for the city of Lake Forest Park, Wash. National leadership award

Gary Taylor, assistant professor and extension specialist in community and regional planning, earned the 2008 American Planning Association's Chapter Presidents Council Leadership Award for Chapter Professional Development Officer Recognition. He was recognized for his work in training the professional and citizen planners of Iowa.

Learning Abroad Service Award

Brenda Jones, associate professor of art and design, received the Phi Beta Delta 2008 Learning Abroad Service Award, recognizing significant involvement with, or development of, Iowa State educational programs abroad.

Honorary degree from NYC college

Gary Wells, professor of psychology and Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will receive the honorary doctorate from John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York on Thursday, May 29. Ceremonies will be held at Madison Square Gardens and Wells will make brief remarks to the college's graduates after receiving the honorary doctorate. The honorary doctorate at John Jay College of Criminal Justice is based on nominations and votes of the college's professors and approval by the City University of New York Board of Trustees. Wells is being honored for his pioneering work on eyewitness identification and his landmark experiments on police lineups that have resulted in reforms in many police jurisdictions across the United States.

Distinguished Iowa Science Teaching Award

Jim Colbert, associate professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology, received the 2008 Distinguished Iowa Science Teaching Award from the Iowa Academy of Science. The award recognizes and promotes undergraduate collegiate science teaching by an individual at an Iowa college or university.

Learning Abroad Leadership Award

Warren Dolphin, University Professor of genetics, development and cell biology, and Carl Bleyle, professor of music, have received the Phi Beta Delta 2008 Learning Abroad Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and contributions to education abroad at Iowa State.

Ames Community Arts awards

Reiman Gardens has earned the Ames Community Arts Council's 2008 Award for Support of the Arts in the Work Place. Earning the council's Award for Support of the Arts in the Media was Iowa Public Radio personality Karen Bryan.

Board of Governors secretary

Nancy Knight, director of graduate enrollment management in the College of Engineering, has been elected to a two-year term as secretary for the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals, beginning July 1, 2008. Currently, Knight serves as chair of the association's Research and National Issues committee.

Distinguished service

James McKean, University Professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine and associate director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, has received the Pork Checkoff's Distinguished Service Award from the National Pork Board. The award recognizes lifelong contributions to the pork industry.

Recruiting efforts net Addy Awards

ISU student recruitment materials garnered several awards in the recent Addy Awards competition among Des Moines area advertising professionals. The student recruitment team of ISU admissions and university marketing and ZLRIgnition collected a Gold Addy and two Silver Addys for TV spots and another Silver for a billboard.

University Researcher Award

Mark Kushner, dean of the College of Engineering, recently was presented the 2008 Semicounductor Industry Association University Researcher Award by an industry panel. The award was presented in Washington, D.C., in recognition of Kushner's many career contributions to semiconductor technology.

Association of Donor Relations Professionals

Angela Joens, senior director of donor relations at the ISU Foundation, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP). Joens joined the ISU Foundation in 1999, and previously worked in fund raising for RuffaloCODY and the American Cancer Society. ADRP represents the donor relations and stewardship profession, supporting the development community through education, professional development and networking.

Schuh appointed book review editor

John Schuh, distinguished professor of educational leadership, has been appointed the book review editor of The New Review of Higher Education. He will oversee the solicitation, editing and publication of approximately 15 reviews per quarterly issue of the journal.

Distinguished scientist

Iver Anderson, Ames Lab metallurgist and adjunct professor in materials science and engineering, received the 2007 Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society's electronic, magnetic and photonic materials division. His development of lead-free solder was cited. More.

Fulbright scholar

Jacinto Fabiosa, co-director of ISU's Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute, has been named a Fulbright Scholar to conduct research at Cairo University, Egypt, from March through July. He will study the drivers of Egypt's expanding food consumption patterns to strengthen the institute's ability to provide relevant market information to U.S. policymakers and stakeholders.

The awards recognize high performance management principles and are given by Gov. Chet Culver, the Executive Council of the Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence and the Iowa Quality Center.

Board of Trustees chair

Jason Follett, practicum coordinator for the University Teacher Education Program, was elected 2007-09 chair of the State Historical Society of Iowa's board of trustees. He currently is in his second three-year term as a gubernatorial appointee to the board.

Seven honored for architectural education

Several Iowa State College of Design faculty and an ISU student have been honored by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture for achievements in architectural education. Gregory Palermo was among three faculty nationally to receive the ACSA Distinguished Professor Award. The ACSA creative achievement award went to faculty members Jason Alread, Thomas Leslie, James Miller, Joe Muench, Carl Rogers and Karen Jeske.

Grand prize for research

Hans van Leeuwen, ISU civil, construction and environmental engineering, and Jacek Koziel, ISU agricultural and biosystems engineering, were awarded the Grand Prize for University Research from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.

William Meeker, professor of statistics was awarded the Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality and named a fellow of the society at the same time. The medal is awarded for technical leadership to an individual "outstanding technical leadership in the field of modern quality control, especially through the development of its theory, principles and techniques."

Tanya Zanish-Belcher, associate professor and head of the special collections department and University Archives at the ISU Library, received the 2007 Outstanding Alumni Award from Wright State University's history department (College of Liberal Arts).

Excellence in procurement

For the third consecutive year, the ISU Purchasing Department has earned the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award. The award for organizations that demonstrate excellence in procurement is sponsored by seven national and state associations in procurement, purchasing and supply management.

Crop science fellow

Silvia Cianzio, agronomy professor, was named a fellow by the Crop Science Society of America.

Agronomy fellow

Agronomy professor-collaborator and USDA-ARS soil scientist David Laird was named a fellow by the American Society of Agronomy.

Soil science fellows

Antonio Mallarino, agronomy professor, and Sally Logsdon, research soil scientist and agronomy collaborative professor, were recognized as 2007 fellows by the Soil Science Society of America.

USDA Excellence in Teaching award

Amy Kaleita, ISU agricultural and biosystems engineering, has been awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is based on teaching quality, philosophy, methodology, service to the profession and students as well as professional growth and development and the endorsement of an administrator, alumnus and colleague.

Iowa Professor of the Year

Gail Nonnecke, ISU horticulture, has been selected Iowa Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The award is part of the U.S. Professors of the Year program, which salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country. It is the only national program to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

ASWA Woman of the Year

Karen Jacobson, accountant for the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, was honored at the Joint National Conference of the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA) and the American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA) October 27-29 in Orlando, Florida. Jacobson was selected Region 3 winner of the Balance Award for Individual Achievement, which recognizes her leadership and accomplishments within the financial and accounting profession and her commitment to work/life balance. She also was selected from the six regional winners as ASWA's Woman of the Year.

AAAS fellows

Five members of the Iowa State University faculty have been awarded the distinction of being named fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Philip W. Becraft, Marit Nilsen-Hamilton, David Lynch, Gordon Miller and Jacob Petrich were awarded because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

Educator Award

Gregory Palmero, ISU architecture, received the Educator Award from the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at its fall convention in Des Moines. Award recipients have positively influenced a large number and wide range of students, are forward-thinking and integrate other areas of expertise into their teaching.
