Student Requests

The Office of the Registrar will provide certification or proof of your enrollment for loan deferments, insurance companies, potential employers, scholarships, schools, and any other entities that need a student's enrollment verified for a particular period of time. Other information that can be provided by the Office of the Registrar include: class ranking, grade point average, course descriptions, tuition and fees assessed by the Office of the Registrar, and other similar types of information.

If you need verification of your enrollment status at ISU, you need to be registered or enrolled for courses prior to requesting enrollment verification for a specific term. Your full-time or part-time status is based upon the number of credits in which you are registered or enrolled.

Note that you are considered registered for a term after you have scheduled classes for a specific term that has not actually started. You move from being registered to enrolled on or after the first day of classes for a specific term.

Certification and verification requests can be made as follows:

Note that graduate students on assistantships are certified as full-time when enrolled in 1.0 or more credits, providing the assistantship is coded on the student's record in the Graduate College.

Graduate students not on assistantship, who meet certain conditions, may be certified as either a full-time or half-time student for loan deferment purposes. To qualify, a graduate student must be accepted into a degree program, registered for course credit and get approval from the Graduate College which allows certification as either full-time or half-time. Contact the Graduate College at 515-294-4531 or by e-mail at grad_college@iastate.edu for the specific qualifications and the form Certification as a Half-time or Full-time Student for Loan Deferment to request this approval.

ISU students can obtain an official printed Enrollment Verification Certificate, at no cost, by accessing the National Students Clearinghouse via AccessPlus. The enrollment certificate can be presented to health insurance agencies, housing authorities, consumer product companies, banks, etc. as required to provide official evidence of enrollment at Iowa State University. To obtain your certification, select "Enrollment cert" on the AccessPlus student menu.

Good Student Discount
You should obtain a good student discount form from your insurance company and submit it to the Office of the Registrar, 214 Enrollment Services Center (formerly Alumni Hall). Although most insurance companies require full-time enrollment and a 3.00 or "B" average, the requirements vary slightly between companies. Thus, you will need to submit the form from your specific insurance company since it will specify the requirements for your good student discount.

At ISU, a grade-point average of 3.00 is equivalent to a "B" average. Your company may have an alternative requirement that you be in the top 20% of your class. However, in most cases students in the top 20% of their class have grade-point averages of 3.20 or higher, so this alternate provision generally is more stringent than the 3.00 GPA.

Your grade-point average at ISU is rounded to the nearest hundreth, so you must have an ISU GPA of 3.00 or above to be certified as having a "B" average. A 2.99 GPA cannot be further rounded, and does not meet the "B" average criteria.

Even though you may not meet the requirements for the good student discount as stated on your insurance company's form, the Office of the Registrar can produce a letter which would list your current grade point average and state your status (full-time, half-time, etc.) You can turn that in to your insurance agent who would then determine if you meet the criteria for a good student discount.
